After you win a *** challenge by 4 or more total STR...

By PeRRaKo, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi there,

To win a challenge by 4 or more total STR is to win a challenge where your STR is 4 or more, regardless of the oponent´s STR or is it to win a challenge where the difference between your STR and your oponet´s is 4 or more in your favour?

Thank you in advance ^_^

To win (or lose) a challenge by 4 or more total STR, you look at the difference between the attacking and defending STRs. So if you count 5 and your opponent counts 3, you win, but not by 4 or more STR.

There are effects that say "after you count X STR during a challenge." For those, you look at your total STR alone, not the difference between the attacking and defending STR.

Roger that ktom, thank you very much for the quick reply :)

Can a character have a negative strength or is it always capped at 0?

Well yes and no. A character's strength when all modifiers are added together their STR can be factored to a negative number... but it is then rounded to zero.

I have a one STR character that gets his STR reduced by 3 in a challenge. He has an effective STR of zero... but anytime I count modfiers I must recalculate all modifiers that are currently relevant. So if I boost him by one after the two negative modifiers were applied during that challenge his STR still ends up with a minus 2. When it is time to compare STR my character sits at 0. This is important because if you win a power challenge with a STR 2 character, my characters STR counts as 0 not -2, so you do not win by 4, no seductive promise for you.

Wow that sounds confusing. I'm sure ktom will come out and say it in a much more clear way.

when counting str for a challenge a charcater is never below 0.

When trying to determine a charcater's STR you add all modifiers, not start every time from a base of 0 so a printed STR of 1then burned down by 3 would be at zero (instead of -2), but if you pump his str by less then 3 he is still at 0 (1-3+2 = 0).

To answer what i think is your underlying question you can't burn someone's str down past 0 to get a win by four without having at least 4 str in the challenge.

I think this is a clearer way of saying what dormouse said.

Or simply:

Even if an individual character's STR would be a negative number after applying all modifiers, a character can never count as less than 0 when counting the total attacking or defending challenge STR (or anything else).
