Very new to the game. What to buy?

Thread resurrection.

Right now I'd get one Interceptor and wait for the Imperial Aces pack. I'll admit I'm not sure if it has all the low skill pilots in it but with Interceptors you're often looking at the more skilled pilots. Aces also looks like it will have much better upgrades including a pair of Push the Limits card. That Elite Pilot skill is another reason a person may have wanted to get more than one A-Wing as they are awesome with many ships.

From wave 3 the recommendations are usually one HWK and Lambda and then some number of the fighters. Generally not more than 3 B-Wings although some of the more popular upgrades for them require other ships (Shuttle being the most likely) but with TIE Bombers it is up in the air. You may want on for Jonus who can help everyone else's secondardy weapons but when you run Bombers for bombers you generally want two or more; some interesting lists have four but by dumping ordnance you can run Bombers as a swarm instead.

Typically, if you can get 4 of each fighter. So I'd say 2 Tie Interceptors and 1 Imp Ace pack. 4 TI's with PtL makes for a fun list. If you only get 3 that limits your options some what, because now you have to mix in other ships.

That's not a bad thing, just that your a bit more limited. The same goes for B Wings, 4 Blue Squad B's with AdvS is a really fun list to fly. But I would highly recommend using proxies for the Advanced Sensors rather then buy 4 Shuttles.

Also 4 Tie Bombers with torps/missiles/bombs and Jonus makes for a good list.

HWK and Lambada on the other hand are IMO not worth getting more then 1 of right now. Some people make 2 to 4 HWK lists work, but typically anything you can do with 4 HWK's you can do as well if not better with 4 Y's.

Sorry for the thread resurrection...

As I said before, I bought two core sets and I wish to buy eight or ten expansion packs. Which ships you suggest?

I don't intend to participate in championships, but I want to have space to play cool and different tactics in both sides

Starting with the 2 core sets...

Next would be a YT-1200 and Firespray 31. That gives you the two main large ships.

After that a X-Wing and Tie Fighter expansion, to get the missing pilots, then I'd say look at getting 1 or 2 of the following packs, I put them in order my opinion of importance.

B-Wing

Tie Interceptor

A-Wing

Y-Wing

Tie Bomber

HWK-290

Thanks, but I don't intend to buy the big ships like YT-1200 and Firespray 31 now. What you suggest instead?

What you suggest instead?

Same thing really. Start with a X and Tie Fighter for the extra pilots, then 1-2 of each expansion pack, in the same order.

I put them in the order I think you'd get the most use out of. So start with the B and buy 1 or 2 of them, and go on until you have what you think you want for now.

Once you have that see how it goes and add ships in as you see fit.

Same thing really.

OK

And what about Tie Advanced? It is not worth buying it in the early game? Why?

And what about Tie Advanced? It is not worth buying it in the early game? Why

The only pilot that's really worth playing in the Tie Advanced is Vader. There's actually a rather long thread on page 1 here explaining the problems with the TA.

The Advanced is not generally considered competitive and is generally believed to be overcosted. I tend to have issues when I add them to a list and in a competitive game, I am happy/disappointed to see one on the otherside of the table.

That being said, since you are not interested in tournaments, I will say that Vader comes in it and is a lot of fun so get that. Heck, get it before the Tie Inteceptor. If you are not getting the Firespray or the Lambda, it would be good to have something with some shields on it in the Imperial lists.

OK I understood the Tie Advanced limitation and I felt disapointed about it because I loved to play with it in Rogue Squadron for n64.

Now that I have 2 core sets, I intend to buy now 8 or 10 expansions to give me good choices in both sides.

This is a solid fleet?

2x core sets

1 X Wing

1 B Wing

2 A Wings

1 Y Wing

1 Tie Fighter

3 Tie Interceptors (1 expansion + Imperial Aces)

1 Tie Bomber

I'm open to your suggestions!

Or should I dump the Y Wing and pick two B Wings?

And what about the solo Tie Bomber?

Or I should forget the Imperial Aces and pick 2 Tie Interceptors and 2 Tie Bombers?

Arg, there are so many choices and my budget isn't that high to get all of them right now

Or I should forget the Imperial Aces and pick 2 Tie Interceptors and 2 Tie Bombers?

I'd say that you can get the Bombers right now and can't get the Imperial Aces set until what February or March?

To me a lone TIE Bomber isn't the greatest thing when all it supports are TIE Fighters and Interceptors. Depending on what you put on it your opponent may prioritize it as a nice fat pig but you've only got missiles and maybe a bomb going for it.

If you don't care about having the upgrades you can skip the big ships but they do offer a number of upgrades that are often looked at. The Falcon gives you Shield and Engine upgrades which can be nice while the Firespray gives you the Stealth Devices and also comes with a Heavy Laser Cannon which you may want for your B-Wing later. Speaking of the B-Wing the Advanced Sensor upgrade you often see mentioned with it is from the Shuttle which could also get you a HLC. If you can proxy everything except the actual ships the large ones aren't as important but if you play with tournament rules, thus needing cards for all the upgrades you use, then those big ships become key.

Now just looking at your list MarioM I'd recommend getting at least the Firespray instead of a couple of those TIEs. The Rebel fighters are tough and can provide a varied number of squadrons but your Imperial list is lacking that heavy hitter OR enough T/F to make a "proper" swarm. Ok, maybe it could make a mixed swarm and perhaps it could do Interceptor Aces but that's all I really see coming out of the Imperial side of things.

Well youll need a start core set. I've been more of a Imperial player. And a big fan of Boba Fett. So I started out with a Slave 1 and a Interceptor expantion. My first tourny I ran Boba, Shoonter Fell , and Dark Curse. So a lot of options with those 3 sets for around $60

If your going rebels, Core set, X Wing, and Falcon. If you can get a hold of a Garven or wedge card, then core, hawk, b wing.

Can't go wrong with rebels sets really. Core set and 2 others should get you up to 100 with some options. Starting out falcons are nice they take a lot of damage and you dont have to worry about arc.

Ok... I'm opening my mind to get one Falcon and one Slave 1.

I already have two core sets and I intend to spend enough money to get 8 or 10 small ships expansions (about$150)

What you suggest that fits in this budget that will give me a lot of replayability and the possibility to play different tatics?

PS.: I will not play in championships. I only intend to play with some friends and girlfriend.

1 X Wing
1 B Wing
2 A Wings
1 Y Wing
1 Tie Fighter
3 Tie Interceptors (1 expansion + Imperial Aces)
1 Tie Bomber
I'm open to your suggestions!

If I had 2x core sets and $200 MSRP to spend on expansions, I would get:

1 Millenium Falcon

1 X-Wing

2 B-Wings

1 Y-Wing

1 A-Wing

2 TIE Fighters

2 TIE Interceptors

1 Slave-I

That's a little more than you were looking at, since you only quoted 10 expansions, but its a more complete experience. This at least lets you play a 6 TIE swarm plus you have a couple other ships. You really need to get up to $300 MSRP to open up most of the options, but there is alot of fun to be had before that. :)

I think I don't want to spend that much right now since I intend to buy the Imperial Aces expansion and another two ships for the Rebels (probably two B Wings)

And how sounds my fleet if I get these:

1 Falcon

1 X Wing

2 A Wings

1 Slave

1 Tie Fighter

2 Tie Interceptors

I might be wrong (because I'm such a noob at this game right now), but I rather have a maneuverable fleet than a heavy target over the table.

That not bad Mario but I'd still recommend a B-Wing or Y-Wing instead of the second A-Wing. Most of my reason for that is simply so you get exposure/access to the upgrade cards that come with those ships and also because they can play a little differently. There's nothing really wrong with getting the second A-Wing first but there may be times you wish you had one of the other two to mess around with.

Ah, if you are going to spend $150 MSRP now and get a $30 MSRP Imperial Aces later, then that changes things slightly. I would only get 1 A-Wing and 1 TIE Interceptor, and instead get 1 B-wing and 1 of something else like a TIE Advanced or a bomber for variety. When you get the Aces expansion pack you'll have three Interceptors, so that's already quite a bit for what you have. I would try and spread it around and get different kinds of ships to see what you like.

So, I would drop 1 of the A-wings for a B-wing, and drop a TIE Interceptor for a TIE Advanced. Otherwise it looks good.

Also, the TIE Advanced gets a bad rap, but Vader is still fun and is iconic!

P.S. Miniature market and CoolStuffInc both sell everything for about 2/3 of MSRP. I have bought from both of them.

Thanks guys, you helped a lot!

Miniature market is $10 for small expansions, $20 for the larger ones. If you spend $100+ (which it sounds like you're doing) you get free shipping. You can get yourself 5 more small ships, or 2 big ones for the same budget.

I've ordered from them and as long as you don't use paypal it's very quick, good service.

Thanks for all of this, very interesting thread for a new player looking for info on what to get!
