Kindly man, too powerful? or just right.

By Wolfbrother, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey looking for some crown sourcing on this topic, kindly man as your agenda allows you to steal non uniques from dead or discard piles…. but not just yours your opponents too, and not just on one challenge type, both intrigue and power challenges and not JUST on the offense, they can defend you and take your dead to fight for them as well. You can probably guess by my tone that i'm of the mind that the kindly man is a little (if not WAY) overpowered. I'm not against recursion, i'm not against adding a lil spice to winning challenges or forcing an opponent to successfully defend his/herself, but the stark card pool of cards to pull from makes this character agenda crazy strong. As a martel player, on more than one occasion i've lost the vipers bannermen and very shortly after watched them give my opponent card advantage and a very formidable chartcer i had little defense for. so whats your opinion? should there be an errata? or is it fine the way it is. Should they only get the character on offense, only one challenge type, only one persons dead and or discard piles?

I hope you are only doing it one time per phase as well as discarding the grabbed non-unique at the end of the phase.

of course, but its still the best character agenda in the game

One the Kindly Man is up and running, he's certainly quite good. He is, however, the least reliable charagenda for a few reasons. The first is that he's an Ally, and the second is that he's strength 1. There are several ways to discard him (rather than kill him), and given the near ubiquity of nightmares and meera reed, many decks can ensure he's blanked before he dies. He also suffers from the typical "you have to draw into him", so the opponent may never even see poor Kindly Man and you've sacrificed running an agenda to do so.

Keep in mind tht end-of-phase events (like the Bannermen leaving play after being picked up by kindly man) don't allow save/cancel responses or responses, and so he can't draw another 2 cards then.

This HAS to be a troll attempt cuz KM is garbage. Will your next thread be exclaiming the epic OP that is Hugor Hill?

Dennis knows this for sure because no one has handed him a decklist with this card in it.

hehe, well played sir.

I have a real fun Kindly Man deck that I played at Gencon, and it works just fine even if he doesn't become an agenda. When he does get working, recurring the House Umber Berserks (then triggering Harrenhall) is really awesome. However, as said above, he is very vulnerable in the current meta. He's a two cost one strength Ally, so Threat from the North will discard him immediately (meaning he doesn't become an agenda), any ally hate discards him, and he can be Enslaved. That said, the deck is probably my favorite to play. I think he's in a good spot.

"As a martel player, on more than one occasion i've lost the vipers bannermen and very shortly after watched them give my opponent card advantage and a very formidable character i had little defense for".

If you think that bannermen could give too much card advantage to kindly man players… then stop playing htem . : ) : )

One does not simply lose Viper's Bannermen.=)

Just run Beserkers to ensure he's killed at the proper time. Sure, that does mean you need two cards to Agendify him but only when you're worried about opponent blanking/discarding him and they go well with his ability anyway.

Run A Game of Cyvasse in your Martell deck. After he Kindly Man's your Bannerman if you can Cyvasse him successfully the Bannerman will return to your hand for you to be able to play again.

Can't tell if serious…

Damnit, I don't have any pictures of Fry.

Maybe I should work with Dan or someone in NYC on putting together another Kindly Man - Bear Island deck. That thing was pretty devestating pre-House of Dreams. I'd imagine it'd take very little tweaking to make it work again.

As far as is Kindly Man balanced, it depends on the deck. Pre-House of Dreams I would literally just kill your best non-unique and then beat you over the head with it. That assumes your best non-unique was better than Northern Cavalry Flank, which was often not the case. I quit before I made any attempt to rebuild my deck to beat House of Dreams.
