House Rules?

By Dr. Nocturne, in Mansions of Madness

Hey dudes! Just seeing if anyone has any interesting house rules/ways to make for better gameplay. Im always looking for ways to make our MoM nights more thematically appealing and deeper in the story at hand.

For example, I have a playlist of music that plays through the game to help set the unnerving intense mood, I make all the investigators read the backstory of their chosen characters before we start, investigators will refer to one another by their characters name and not their players name, no flavor text is skipped over…ever! Stuff like that. I'd love to hear what things you guys implement into your games to improve the quality.

Cheers!

I personally remove puzzles for an intellegence test, I love the mechanic but to slow unfortunatly

So instead of making the investigators solve the puzzle you just have them roll for intellect and if they pass the puzzle is solved? I do agree puzzles slow the game but I think it's an important mechanic. Maybe I'll try your rule this weekend. To speed things up I have other investigators take their turns while the puzzle is being worked on. Also removes temptation to help the investigator with the puzzle haha!

I love the mechanic and I feel it cheapens the game to remove it personally but my regular group of 6….. has only one experienced boardgamer/RPG/Tabletoper and that is me, my last game was 5 hours long (ended after midnight with two of the wives playing asleep after I butchered them in the finale) and we did that rule and it helped a lot it has been our longest game and most fun because stoppages kill any game and me setting up the puzzle is a stoppage! Incidently I am writing a small puzzle app currently for myself to fulfil this criteria so I hope that will help us to get the best of both worlds!

Wow! asustado Well in that case where the game is super long then I'm totally with you. Must have been some epic encounter.

And I completely understand your change for the lack of gaming experience within your group. Way to go for showing them the light! haha.

Its a good group basically three couples and they are great cause they roleplay without knowing it, better than my brothers who break it down to the mechanics of the game. the point is 5 hours is fine we have played a lot shorter games than that which have been less interesting due to puzzle stops etc. You dont feel it if your all engaged. Its a lot of fun.
