Since the search function isn't working I am posting this without looking through past posts so please just answer it. The activity marker isn't explained in the rules with the game that I could see nor in the PDF. I did the find in the PDF and it is there but not explained. What do they do?
activity marker
Some cards cause an ongoing event to occur in a certain place. For example you may draw a Rumor Mythos card, or Environment Mythos card, that makes something happen for multiple turns. You place the activity marker on the location to remind people there's something special happening there.
Rulebook page 12:
Other Effects:
Additionally, the mythos card may call
for one or more “activity” or “closed” markers to be
placed on specific locations. Simply place the respective
markers on the locations indicated by the card. If the
card leaves play, remove the markers from the locations
as well.
Explains it pretty well to me.

All it explains is where to put it. But I downloaded the FAQ and that "explains it pretty well" unlike the rulebook. It doesn't do anything as long as you have the mythos cards that are in effect handy. Since they shouldn't be hidden anywhere they don't need a reminder any more than an environment card does which does the same thing but without an activity marker. Since I am new to the game and haven't seen all the cards yet maybe there are some where the activity marker actually has a use? If I am missing something please feel free to clarify but quoting the rulebook isn't a clarification in this case even if I had missed that part.
Nothing to clarify. Activity markers are just a reminder to the players that something special is occuring in that location (you can do x if you go here, you can pass the current rumor if you spend y here...)
There are three different markers just so players can tell them apart if there are multiple such events.
Right. Environments usually take place everywhere, (with some exceptions). But many events take place at a certain spot. The activity markers are there to ensure people remember the event when they pass through that spot.
