And a bloody fantastic re-work of a classic!

I own all the 1st edition releases and have spent many a happy gaming session running campaigns (some over a year long!), initially I wasn't too interested in 2nd edition until FF released the conversion kit so you could use all monsters and heroes. Huzzaaa! Took the plunge and really glad I did, they have done a great job of streamlining the whole game system and with a little twiddling I reckon I could even use the original campaign settings of road to legend and sea of blood

2nd Edition also contains some stonking minis, fun and unusual things to paint away from the norm such as the Meriod and that funky 'all-in-one' Elemental. Approached these figures as I do with most soft plastic board game contents. A level of painting I refer to 'gaming standard' basic basing, no eyes, nice bold colours, etc. everything in the core and lair of the Wyrm sets were painted over a few days…mainly because I wanted to get stuck in and play!

You use an airbrush right? Or are you just some kind of superhuman color blender?

Do you have a recommendation for carry cases for painted Descent models? Just from looking online, I'm not sure what would be best…

Hi chaps, thanks for the comps, always enjoy painting the Descent stuff as there are often unique creatures in there that offer me a little change from the usual commission work. There is also always a bunch of cracking artwork to use for reference

Gaarge, I don't use dry brushing. I use an airbrush to lay down base colours and subtle highlights (mainly because it is so quick!) then finish things off with a brush blending technique if there are any strong angles or detail points, after this it's strong lining to bring out the detail, I find this is nice and effective for gaming miniatures as from the distance they are usually viewed it really makes them 'pop' and stand out, there's nothing makes a game more stimulating than a nice set of painted minis I always think (although to be honest I think I am just addicted to painting anything plastic that comes in a box!)

Saying that while a lot of the large base miniatures for Descent are mostly airbrush work most of the smaller stuff is strictly brush work, FFG managed to but so much detail on these tiny figures (compared to the usual 28mm heroic scale I am used to) brush work is really the only way to go so I tend to stick to inks and a quick two colour brush blend just to add a little depth The real secret with my style of gaming miniatures is in the lining which is simply picking out the detail with an almost white mix of the base colour, this is also a very simple technique that anyone can learn in a relatively short time, all you need is a decent detail brush, good eyes and a steady hand. It's very therapeutic I find too!

Go grab an old mini and try the lining technique, I'll bet it looks 100% better after a little work with minimum effort

I have found from experience that one of the secrets to painting a large number of minis so fast is to break them down into base colours and groups. So, for instance all the reds on the flesh mongers and Goblin archers would have been painted at the same time. Try and keep numbers down to about 10 at a time 15 tops as too many minis on the go can quickly overwhelm you and make things more of a chore rather than fun. Where possible always use base colours too, rather than blends as obviously dipping straight into a pot is always much quicker than having to mix and match a blend of two or more colours!

Oh, it also helps if you have been doing this stuff for years and are able to enter a Jedi like trance, wake up a few hours later with no recollection of what just happened apart from a bunch of painted miniatures, several empty cups of tea, a stiff back and a strangely coloured tongue….but that's a story for another day…

Oh Gaarge, the cases. I use KR multicase

Think its F4 model for the standard miniatures (check that, I'm not 100%) and an F3 for the large bases. I snip the dividing foam between two sections on the F4 and find all of the large stuff fits nicely. I have fitted every single miniature from 1st edition + expansions and 2nd edition in 3 easy to carry (and cheap) cases this way

Had a rummage through the bits box and pulled out a few odds n sods that I thought might be useful during d2 campaigns. painted up an animate for our resident necro, found some funky little resin crystsal sculpts for the Geomancer, couple 'o nice stand-ins for the farrows along with a few other bits n bobs. Hate playing with boring old tokens and I didn't particularly like the original sculpts of the lieutenant models from D1

Where do you live? I wanna come visit you while you sleeps and help myself to some epic looking Miniatures.

Has anyone done any modifying of their figures over and above just simply painting them? I look at the 1E giant figure and think it's a bit plain, I was thinking of using my skills s a former figure sculptor to give the figure stuff like boots, an axe, some bits of armor, that kind of thing and using him as the Master Giant, and the plain one as the minion. I may or may not do the same to other figures, that depends on the individual figure. Anybody else into this?

I think these are the best painted I've seen, and I've looked at alot! You used Citadel paints?

Man, I forgot I had these to finish off! Have about three KR cases full of all the expansion stuff from the point where I got sidetracked by some other project!
