Purity Seals

By Jutlander, in Only War

I was designing a Penitent Regiment and I noticed that I could give them Purity Seals. I know what they are (e.g. not fuzzy little animals with a sense of personal hygiene), but I wondered what they did.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find them in the equipment lists.

Am I blind?

Does anyone know what they do (maybe from one of the other games)?

They only exist in that one description of them.

Personally i'd expect them to offer either a bonus to or a re-roll of a fail WP test caused by fear.

Typical. People have been asking about this since early beta, and yet there still is no response from FFG regarding Purity Seals. How hard can it be? What are they waiting for?

In TT, the Purity Seal allowed an IG Plasma Gunner to re-roll 1s on to-hit dice, provided extra movement for the zealous Black Templars, and allowed Space Marines to roll an extra die for their Fall Back move and choose the two they wanted to use.

Perhaps have them provide a +5 bonus to Fear Tests, and reduce Corruption from Warp Shock by 1 (to a minimum of 1). Or, allow PCs with Purity Seals to Disengage as a Half Action. Or, allow a PC to re-roll a BS Test when a weapon Overheats.

It's actually ironic, considering Purity Seals never had a consistent effect in TT; in one incarnation of a codex they'd be in and the next they'd be out. They must not be as important as one might expect. All the artwork depicting Confessors, Priests, Banishers, and Sororitas draped in a multitude of Purity Seals…for no reason other than visual asthetics.

As an IG player, there is nothing that allows a plasma gunner, or any other troops, to re-roll 1s, apart form Warlords traits (which ar ein the mian book, not the army Codex)

Also, there is no such things as a purity seal for the Guard. Perhaps in previous Codexes, but not anymore.

Yes, previous codex. Like I said: in one publication, out the next.

In OW, serve no purpose.

I would give Purity Seals the same effect as the "Armour of Contempt" Talent back in Dark Heresy, that being to reduce the ammount of Corruption taken by 1 and making it possible to make a WP-check to ignore the effects of already existing corruption for a round. They may be rather powerful like this, but Purity Seals are a means to show and remind the wearer of the purity of his/her Soul, not as a reminder of Valour (giving a bonus to fear test is rather silly imo). This works perfectly given that the Talent has been canned somewhere along the system development (I believe it was stil present in Rogue Trader, not sure about Deathwatch)

I wrote up some rules for purity seals when Dark Heresy first came out. they were on the Dark Reign site but that seems to be gone now, so I've put them on Google Docs:

Essentially they give you small bonuses to specific tests, just as medals do in Only War.

Cheers
