200th game, and it was a weird one

By Tibs, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Just played my 200th game of Arkham Horror!

It was an all-expansion game, Luke / Mary / Diana / Dexter against Hastur / Dunwich Horror / Bast. The game was drawn randomly as I always do.

A few strange things happened along the way:

  • Someone actually became Beloved of Bast . This is the first time it's happened in the 20 games I've played using Bast. Most of those games were using all available expansions, so I guess that's to be expected :-P
  • Nodens's Favor was out long enough for two characters to take advantage of it and save 4 clues while sealing. Quite a relief against Hastur :-D
  • The three rift tracks filled 3/4 the way and hung there for most of the game. There were a lot of weird movement patterns and patterns that matched with tracks that were already full. The first rift did not open until the turn before the game was over.
  • The first Next Act card came out after a couple turns, so I let it stay. Then there was a deck reshuffle and another one popped out soon after, which meant we were hanging on the brink of Act III for most of the game.
  • The Dunwich Horror track started with one token on it and gained one when the TL hit 3, so there was an ever-increasing chance that the Horror would awaken--it didn't.
  • Diana Stanley got 2 copies of Arcane Insight because she had to get the second one--and she never successfully cast either of them, despite her high Lore, her immense sanity healing abilities (she was Beloved of Bast!), and concerns over the dire card castle that was wobbling above us, for the above few bullets.
  • Luke took a spell from another investigator just in time to have a red other world encounter that allowed him to discard two spells to gain 5 clues, which he would not have been able to do otherwise. Pretty kickass for a red card.
  • Dexter completed the Sealing the Beast's Power mission early, so there was a point in the game where if Hastur had awoken, we would have fought him with a +2 modifier.
  • Sister Mary, the nun who is infamous for her non-nunlike behavior (un-nunsmanship?) was the only character to receive a corruption card-- Downward Spiral , which netted her four more corruptions. Though earlier, she did turn down a chance at a Cult of the Thousand membership, so I guess she's not all bad. But one of her corruptions was Speak to Your Friend , so she was still endorsing the cult anyway? I guess that's what you get for starting with Mythos Lore .
  • On her way to seal the 6th gate, Diana had to spend clues to avoid getting LiTaS. She didn't have enough to seal--as she had blown 8 of them trying to pass this check. I was raging. I figured that since there was only one gate left, chances were good she could come back and close the last gate, without a new one opening. Turns out it didn't matter, since Diana's encounter next round was the one where she could sacrifice herself to seal her gate.So she gave us simultaneous wins by closing all gates and sealing 6 gates. Unfortunately, the way the encounter was worded, choosing to seal the gate meant choosing to be devoured, so her Beloved of Bast didn't even save her from her fate.

It's been a great run all these years! Let's hear your stories of statistical outliers.

You didn't mention it, so guess it wasn't a big deal (especially given the rift progress in the game), but did you have someone on "garbage duty"? Or did you just ignore the KH board entirely? Also, I think having Mary in the game negated the bad karma from Dexter gran_risa.gif , thus made it easier .

Congratulation to your 200th game! aplauso.gif

Sounds like it was quite fun! demonio.gif

Sounds more wonderful than weird to me. Obviously it was quite a game; thanks for sharing it with us!

I completely ignored Kingsport and just gunned it for clues. While this is not ordinary behavior for me--I'd definitely try to send someone in if a rift track hit 3--we were against Hastur. We couldn't afford to screw around when gaining clues, and it's no big deal if the rifts all open, because the extra doom tokens may push him to awaken before the terror level got too high to handle. Against probably any other AO, I would have tried to assign someone to keep Kingsport in line. Dunwich, as you probably guessed, got far more attention because of the terror level threat posed by vortexes.

Just played our 100th and lost :(

Tsathoggua, Bast, Hypnos, Luke, Diana, Fern, Rita, DH and KH.

Lost to the Ape in epic battle!

And with ape you probably mean toad?

It's called Gene Simmons around here partido_risa.gif !

He's kind of like a sloth-ape-toad, really... with batlike qualities. In fact, doesn't he have two totally different descriptions?
