No storage for miniatures. Is it a problem? About miniatures bending.

By LedZep, in X-Wing

Hey!

I have yet yo buy a carrying case for my minis and since I use them a lot I just have them all placed on their bases ready to play without the pilot cards.

I just put them in a case all toghether and take them everywhere. They dont crash into eachother nor they fall.

My question is…Is there a problem with leaving them on their bases? Does the base pegs bend if you leve it like that? Do the miniatures bend with time? Is there any problems that can come from not unasembling my miniatures after I play? They are nicely placed on my table on formation.

Thanks

I use the Plano 5320. The rebel and tie advanced ships stay on 1 peg, regular ties lay down on 2 pegs, over lapping each other (base to ship). Top portion holds all tokens, chits, dice, asteroids, and movement pieces. I would post a pic, but this forum doesn't like pics! ??

Oh yeah, setup/tear down is a breeze.

I know about the huge ammount of carying cases. Im just wondering if leaving the miniatures on their pegs for extended periods of time actually damages the ship or the pegs.

My guess would be no.

I personally would be very nervous, leaving them assembled for extended periods. I've already had one of my posts break just from careless handling during a game (it got knocked off the edge of the table onto the floor), so the thought of them rattling around in a case makes me shudder. Assembly is so quick and easy, why risk it??

For my X-Wing collection I use this http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Double-Cover-Tackle-Organizer/dp/B001ECQPVQ :

One side for each faction with plenty of room for ship and counter storage. As for miniature damage I haven't seen any as of yet….I think in the small space I have them in and the light weight of the minis doesn't do any damage if they rattle around in their spots. I do keep them disassembled except for a single peg in the ships….no breakage as of yet. The reason for keeping a single peg attached is I have pulled the socket where the peg attaches to a ship out while disassembling….no problem as I was able to glue it back in place with a bit of super glue.

I used to leave my ships "assembled" (posts connected and slotted into the ship), but I had two of the "mating posts" (that little bitty post that actually mates the ship to the clear acrylic post) come out/ break off. One was in an X-Wing, one in a TIE Advanced. Since then, I've removed everything from everything when I pack up.

At that time, I was just putting everything lose back into my Core Set box in one of the deep sidewells. Full disclosure: I carried that Core Set box in a backpack to work everyday as I was playing with some folks from work on lunch hours, so my experience may have been rougher than a typical user.

I've since re-tasked an old Plano box I was using for 40k bits to hold my ships.

My Plano box holds the ships almost perfect, without any pressure on the ship from the case.

I leave my ships assembled in my LR Multicase foam. So far no issues of any kind.

I doubt that the mere fact that they are assembled for extended periods of time will make any difference what so ever. Just take care not to store the ships so that the pegs can break and/or bend.

Stack-On 17 compartment case for X-Wing

I use a STACK-ON 17 compartment case that allows me to store between 24-27 fighters on one peg stands. (I have extra dividers and made all of mine 24 compartments) The sell for around $7.47 at Wal Mart and I have seen them cheaper at around $6.99 on line.

I can store the maneuver dials in the compartment with the ships. The only thing I might do is add some shelf liner to the bottom and one side to hold them better in the compartments. These are the only cases I have found that allow me to keep my fighters ready for flight on a minutes notice. Right now I have four of these cases and also the Plano Cases that everyone else is so crazy about along with one Camera hard case with pluck and pull foam for the expansions down the road.

Forgot the size of the case. It is 14 1/2 inches by 2 5/8 inches by 11 5/8 inches. It stacks well with my Plano 5231 lockjaw organizer which is 14.5 inches by 3.38 inches by 11.75 inches.
