hope to return to UFS

By MarthWMaster, in UFS General Discussion

First of all, I don't mean this to sound like a flame, and if you're reading it as such I apologize. I'm going to be as honest as possible, but my intent is not to upset anyone who plays the game.

I used to play UFS, until a single play event prompted me to leave because I saw the level of power creep in the game to be irreparable. I was going to rejoin when Fantasy Flight Games acquired the license, but then I heard that they would not be making it a Living Card Game (a decision which still leaves me a little baffled). That said, I am considering joining again, but before I do I would like to get some of your opinions on the game and its power creep. Has it been toned down since the switch? Or is it still the case that many cards are rendered useless once a new set is released.

Umm.

UFS isn't a living card game.

And they power creep is being succesfully balanced in my eyes.

That's about the jist of it. Go out and buy lots of set 12 when it comes out.

Learn to read. He said he was baffled / upset about it NOT being a living card game, which is apparently preferable for him.

Yes power levels go up and down all the time in TCGs. New cards come out making old cards not so good, old cards that were bad are now good because new stuff isn't as good as it is. Ebb and flow. Like the stock market... well except it goes up sometimes.

Right now nothing has been printed really that's all that crazy or creepingly powerful. Its some good stuff. Some stuff that should have been that powerful from the start (that foundation that's a free enhance for +1 damage for punches). Some stuff that's toned down cause it was too strong when released (yoga mastery)

Alright, I'll give UFS another try, but choose to exercise more caution when deciding when and which sets to buy.

My other question is completely unrelated, but about how often are images added to the list of selectable avatars? I'm noticing a disturbing absence of Cassandra in the UFS section. :3

The power creep has gotten a lot better recently and will be every better when set 12 comes out next month .

I only want to buy the cards from properties I'm actually a fan of. Which properties will be featured in Set 12?

Shadowar[the old property that STG started and Steve with the help of FFG finished] and Soul Calibur IV

also not to sound like an ass but if you are going to be competitive at a high level *ie nats/worlds* you might wanna branch outside of just your faves, you dont necessarily have to buy the cards you need from the other licenses through packs just trade for them if you have to. But if you're gonna be like my area then have fun with your theme decks and lemme know how many wacky combos you can come up with.

btw what properties do you mainly buy?

N.J.

I'm one of the least competitive people in the world. I'll employ a different deckbuilding strategy when playing in higher-level tournaments, but at the local level I really only care about making as much fun for myself and everybody else.

When I played, I mostly bought Soul Calibur and SNK cards, with only a few exceptions.

Ok well SNK has good stuff they have been in the last 2 sets and SC4 will be in set 12 so should be good for you .

You know this for a fact? :P

Oh and OP... buying cards for liscences you are only interested in is all fine and good. I always favour the sets I like intellectual property wise over those that I don't.

HOWEVER please remember that the game in its balanced form considers that everyone is buying some cards from all sets and liscences. If you want to be super uber competetive on the ultra scale DO NOT expect to be able to accomplish that by restricting yourself to, say 40% of the cards in the game.

No I do not know this for a fact just that from how good set 11 is I think with a base set James will be giving us some great tools next set to balance out the meta.

Heh. you're just always so confident in your statements about these things, its almost like its being stated as fact.

But yes, comparing set 11 to previous sets it totally does seem things are moving in the right direciton.

though in hind sight... release 7 was pretty nice power wise wasn't it? ... then 8 hit.. well I guess that set was ok except for a few like Bitter Rivals, Addes and BRT... and replenishment... am I missing any? lol

Here's to our hopes of set 12! Cheers!

In hindsight as well, different developer = different developing philosophy.

LOL power creep in UFS? If anything I have only seen a decrease in power since the start of the game. I started playing when the game first came out and stopped playing after Set 2 because there was no interest in my area. I got back into the game for a bit after the release of Fortune and Glory and noticed right away that the power of attack had gone signifincantly down since I first played. Now I don't mean to say that attacks were not good but when compared to the legacy ones they were not too impressive to me. CSS was the only exception. I stopped quite soon after because once again even though we had one more guy interested in starting the game it wasn't enough to just have 3 players.

UFS really started up when my TCG group(made up of me and about 10-11 guys) stopped playing the Naruto CCG and got into UFS. This was a bit after the release of Realm of Midnight and Deadly ground. I noticed an even bigger power loss for attacks though found that foundation had stayed quite powerful if not gotten even stronger(mostly I believed due to the fact that attacks were not really all the good anymore). I found out about the next rotation coming out soon so I started looking at the most recent sets and saw that there was hardly any 3 Check Throws, Attacks with more printed damage than their printed difficulty, Good finisher attacks, etc. So I really don't know what power creep is being discussed but I am guessing it was during one of the periods that I was gone. I guess some foundations have been a bit over the top.

Still I have seen pretty much every card in the game now and have yet to see an Action more insane than You Will Not Escape or Start Over, Negation as good as Yoga Mastery or Lost memories, Destruction effects as powerful as Tiger Genocide or Roundhouse Kick or Impetuous, Powerful Attacks with a Powerful rating higher than 3....I could go on and on. So yeah I have yet to see this power creep. UFS has always been one of the most balanced games I have ever played when compared to the others and I have played a TON.

This is the proof that its don't always work.

Almost all of set 10 (well... feline spike need not apply) and 11 were quite different than 9 and 8... i'd say a bit of the shift MUST have been the company change and whoever was designing it before hata. so whoever that was, give him/her/them some credit too, eh? But if hata was even responsible for half of set 11, it was good whatever he did!

Not in the least bit broken though. As I said there were foundations in the past that were much more insane.

The only card in the game that I have any problems with whatsoever is The Owl

And to that everyone always answers " don't play foundations you don't like!" but is not a really good answer. lol.
