OL spending threat to roll extra dice - timing

By Paul Grogan, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I'm sure either I or someone else has asked this before, but I cant remember what was said.

In an RtL encounter, can the OL roll his attack dice for the monster, then spend threat to roll extra black dice, then use the surges from those dice to gain some more threat to then roll more dice.

I think the easiest way to rule it would be to say no, and that the counting up of surges for threat is done after all dice are rolled, but I'm so used to seeing the dice and adding the threat straight away because otherwise I forget :)

I want to say you can, but I could be wrong.

An example arguing in favor is to look at the Guantlets of Power/Rapid Fire combo. The fatigue you get from the Guantlets can be used to power the Rapid Fire in an endless hellish loop during the same attack. Sounds like the same thing for the OL using Threat generated from an attack to get extra/dice upgrades to the same attack from my perspective.

You cannot. spending surges comes after adding dice. This can be seen with a dodged attack. You can't add dice after the dodge re-roll, and you can't spend surges before the dodge re-roll, so therefor you can't add dice after you spend surges. The steps for an attack are

1. Roll dice

2. Re-roll dice

3. If not a miss, spend surges

The gauntlets combo works because you are spending surges from one attack to make a second attack, not to improve the first attack.

That's right.

However, there are a great number of people who would agrue that you can add dice after a Dodge since the rolls for the attack sequence never actually take rerolls into account properly.

Indeed. In fact you can explicitly add dice at any time during an attack (though adding them after the attack parameters have been finalised at the end of stage 5 is pointless, or rather, just means your first stage 5 was a 'calculation only' run and now you need to redo stage 5 for real...). This is clear and unquestionable IMO.
The big question however, is whether the added dice are subject to the reroll or not. Some say yes, I say no (because the reroll effect has been resolved and there is no indication that it is a 'permanent'' affect).

May I humbly request that the argument about dodge be confined to the thread about that topic?

However you rule dodge, I think Badend is correct about the use of surges for threat and fatigue: surges don't have any effect at all until the attack is resolved, at which point it's too late to add dice to that attack. The Rapid Fire/Gauntlets combo works because Rapid Fire is triggered after making an attack, not as part of the attack.
