Still like ships to be named after the ladies lads, especially tragic greek dramatic and mythological names ie: (The last ship I was to crash in, "The Persephone", let the ladies fly their freek flags, Is their any codex for names of Imperial Naval Ships because it is so random in BL lit and gaming books that a name is just a name.
In my game mastering (two groups) I use the name
Ariadne
for a warp tramp freighter that travells the routes around Scintilla. In it´s recent history, it had strong relationships with the Tantalus Combine (based on Scintilla) but suffered from that after the combines decline (mentioned in "Edge of Darkness")
I took the name from an old story of acient greek, part of the "Minotaur Myth", as far as I know. One of two noble twin sisters, The "fair one" of them.

Page 108 of the Battlefleet Gothic core rulebook has a callout discussing the naming conventions of Imperial Navy ships. (You can also download the rulebook as a free PDF from Games Workshop's website.)

Hmm got a friend playing that game. Love the ship models and I'm defenitly going to borrow his rulebook now.
Names I prefer:
Emporers Wrath: If the character is a really emporere loving man that will destroy all Xenos in the name of the Imperium, wich I doubt I will be.
The Nevrusk: random thingy that popped in my mind.
And I'm out of fantasy at the moment.
I use some of these in Galactic Civilizations
Reliant
Relentless
Dauntless
OK, I SUPPOSE "THE GOOD SHIP LOLLIPOP" ISN'T A GOOD CHOICE???
WE USE: THE EMPEROR'S VENGEANCE
THE DRAGON WING
THE SHADOW WITCH
THE CRUCIBLE
HELL'S FURY
THE TRADE WIND
THE LOST LADY
BOUND FOR GLORY
FARAWAY TRAVELER
THE WINDRUNNER
THE MOONCHASER
THE LOST HORIZON
THESE ARE JUST A FEW, WE TEND TO BE SIMPLE WITH SOME MEANING, WE HAVE OVER 30 SHIPS IN MY GAME AT PRESENT.
Guess I'll give it a shot
The Long Lost
The Herald of Rebirth
The Widow
The Lonely Traveler
The Sunking
Springtime for the emperor
The Manly Obsession
The Restless
The Icarus
The Stargazer
The Warpmaster
The Siren's Call
The Skybound
The Late Awakening
The Void Serment
The Warrior's Lament
The Faraway Sanctuary
The Sinless
Destiny
Huh... that should be enough for now
Personally, I'd like to name a ship: I love Xenos! Think of the hilarity knowing that some lowly comms technician/acolyte/whatever was just shot when asked what the name of the ship that's docking.
Inquisitor: What is the name of that ship?
Lowly comms technician/acolyte/whatever: Sir its.. its the.. I love xenos!
Inquisitor: HERESY! <BLAM!>
Good times.. Sorry.. I guess that may not be grimdark enough for Warhammer 40k.
This is why I like orks. They know how to have fun.
Other possible names:
The Grim Defenestrator - just have your void suit/void breather handy
Spirit of Adventure - Up was a fantastic movie
The Indefatigable - Horatio Hornblower for the win!
The Inevitably Successful In All Circumstances - If you can get this obscure reference, you get one 'Get out of Heresy! free card'.
Well...our RT group's ship is the Sword of the Lord .
We also had the following:
Necromonger
Lord Castellan
Emperor's Sentinel
Just keep in mond that these ships are owned/operated by independent traders and "privateers" so they may have "acquired" the ship from the military, etc. and rename them to something a little more flamboyant...something that suits the Rogue Trader's personality, history, or disposition.
The only ship that's turned up more than once in my story arc is Fire Runner. Originally named Infanta Obscuro, this ship serves as a base of operations for the Ordo Malleus in the Regions of Einore (My own brainchild sector)
Names of starships I've used in sessions as GM:
The Clockwork vision (Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator vessel)
The Green Dawn (Ordo Xenos strike cruiser)
and last but not least:
The Sword of Retribution (which is actually the famous Overlord Class battlecruiser that fought in the Gothic campaign along with it's two sisterships The Flame of Purity and The Cypra Probatii)
So the last one is not my own invention, but the other two are.
The Slightly Irritated Badger
Latinis Diest Flageris Serrramos Sunt
"In latin everything sounds awesome'
The Dorkus-Malorkus
Definitely looking at the list of ship names at the famous Battle of Trafalgar . Or perhaps the Hornblower or the Aubrey .

For merchant ships, it depends on who made or owns the ship. A gothic civilization like the Imperium would use names that refer or suggest nobility in either grace or decadence with names like the Autumn Queen , the Golden Statesman , or the Corpulent Lady (weight was often a sign of status back in earlier periods although this is certainly a more tongue-in-cheek name then the others.) Or they could go with names that suggest great wealth such as the already mentioned Sovereign Venture.
For pirate vessels, I try to stick with something that sounds poetic... if guys like John McClain and Duncan McCloud wrote poetry that is. Something elegant yet you know there's a air of machocism in the thought process involved.
For military vessels, which I don't have a lot of experience working with, the simplest name often appears to be the best. His Fiery Justice or Divine Retribution have the benefit of being easy to remember and certainly get the point of being a big ship with a lot of guns to lay waste to fools across to curious parties.
Actually, no. But I could start some ties If I wanted to.
I just didn't connect the two together.
I could borrow from Stephen R Donaldson's wonderful Gap series and use Captain's Fancy, Bright Beauty, Free Lunch, Calm Horizons, Tranquil Hegemony or Sledgehammer . I'd rather use one I had in a story I wrote some years ago - Ethical Adjudicator .
Someone else also thought of it, but Manifest Destiny is a good one. As is Divine Right.
As long as the name is ostentatious and pompous, you're good to go.
To show that someone more than Terminus Est has read the Books of the New Sun, my RT captains
The Flower of Avern
I like the idea of dueling with plants, and I have as part of the family history that they cultivate them. Would fighting with Averns be covered by primitive melee weapon (universal) skill or would I need specialized training. Can I get training free, as it is part of my RT's family history?

Knowing that many navies re-use ship names to maintain traditions and links with the past, I've actually used 'Ajax' as well as 'Warspite' (both Royal Navy ships) as Imperial Navy vessels, reasoning that the names would have stayed in use right from the 17th century to the 41st millennium!

I was thinking about two names for some Naval dynasty, militaristic Rogue trader: Righterous Interdiction and Edict of Intolerance
