Shireen Baratheon - Character Agenda

By HastAttack, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Shireen's (F26 - from Val Fohaeris) )response is

"After you win a power challenge choose a character you control with renown

Until the end of the phase when that character claims power for renown, it claims one additional power"

Could someone clarify whether this effect is cumulative - I beleive it is

i.e. I win a power challenge (could be as a defender) and claim renown ~ maybe for Robert Barathon who claims 2 power anyway

As per the agenda, I choose a character (Robert) - so now he claims 3 power for renown

I win another power challenge (Same phase) and this time I claim 3 power for renown

My reading of the agenda is that, as I have won a power challenge, I can choose a character etc. - so I choose the same Robert again and so the his renown claim is now up to 4 power etc.

Alternatively I could use the agenda to increment the power claim for renown for several characters - once each time I win a power challenge

I got screwed by not being allowed to do this in a game :(

thanks

You can use Shireen's Response once for each Power challenge you win. Each time you use her ability, she creates a separate lasting effect - each of which would resolve separately. You can, in fact, use her ability on the same character twice (if you win two separate power challenges) and have it claim 2 additional power (one for each of the separatly resolving effects) when it claims Renown.

However, you are making one very big error:

You will never claim the additional power from Shireen's Response in the same power challenge that allows her to use her Response. That's because the order of resolving a challenge is:

  1. Determine winner
  2. Resolve Claim
  3. Award "unopposed"
  4. Award "Renown"
  5. Resolve passive effects initiated by anything in 1-4
  6. Use Responses for anything in 1-5

So, the "get an extra power for Renown" given to a character by Shireen would activate and give the extra power in #5. But the Response itself, giving the character the effect, could not be used until #6.

Specifically, when you win a power challenge in #1, you cannot trigger Shireen until #6. Once you trigger her, the effect she gives to the Renown character should have been used in #5 - and you don't get to go backwards.

End result: Win power challenge #1; trigger Shireen in Response to power challenge #1, choosing a character that participated in power challenge #1; no extra renown power for power challenge #1 because it's too late to use the "new ability" for that challenge.

Thanks ktom

That's what I meant - just badly phrased - there is no benefit for the first challenge and maybe using the Robert with the 2 renown wasn't the smartest idea

The actual instance was that I won a power challenge as the defender, one player had An Empty Throne plot and I had Power of Blood with Mellisandra (claim 2 power for unapposed etc.) … I was all set to rake in huge renown rewards that turn
