Agree or Disagree? My Thoughts on Stormtroopers (just for fun)

By Sturn, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The ONLY thing I don't like from a game point of view is this means there aren't less powerful Imperial mooks (Army Troopers) to throw at players. But, I suppose I can make the security guards (previously naval troopers) more common and make them the mooks found guarding outposts, ships, space stations, etc.

Consider that the US Air Force has the world’s largest police force as security guards at all their air bases around the world, and if you considered them to be an "army", they would be the world’s third largest.

But those guys really are trained like police officers and not soldiers, although they did go through soldier-style basic training.

I imagine that the Navy mooks are much the same, just on a smaller scale.

I think it works well with the Stormtroopers being the shock infantry and the black-clad big helmet guys being just security guards. So you end up with the offensive shock infantry and the defensive security guards. This fits with everything we see Imperial troops doing in the movies:

  1. Boarding action of an important possibly Rebel craft: Stormtroopers, the assault troops. Makes sense. Check.
  2. Search and capture droids possibly carrying extremely important data: Assigned to the more elite and loyal Stormtroopers then the Security Guards. Check.
  3. Guarding cell block on Death Star: Security Guards. Completely in their job description. Check.
  4. Searching, guarding, and assisting technicians searching a small craft that was capture by the Death Star. Stormtroopers. See below for full explanation.
  5. Responding to infiltration of Death Star: Stormtroopers. See below for full explanation.
  6. Assaulting a rebel base: Stormtroopers. The assault troops. Check.
  7. Escorting a VIP around a Star Destroyer: Security Guards. Bodyguard security duty. Check.
  8. Deploy to a captive city supporting an important mission by Lord Vader: Stormtroopers. Check.
  9. Operating and guarding a shield generator bunker: Security Guards. Check.
  10. Deployed by the Emperor himself on the culmination of an important plan involving destruction of the Allliance: Stormtroopers. Hand picked ones. Check.

I only see issues with #4 and #5 in that list when dividing the two armed troops we see into offensive and defensive roles. But, even these can easily be explained away.

#4: A transport matching description of one possibly carrying crucial plans to the Death Star is captured. Quickly send in the best troops to board, search, then guard this craft of course. The standard response I think would have been to send in Security Guards to question the transport crew. But, if an officer got wind that craft is of utmost importance, the Security Guards would have been told to stand down while the Stormtroopers are sent in instead.

#5: Initially the heroes dispatched the Security Guards at the cell block. The officer questioning Han on the comlink stated he was sending more troops to investigate. The officer glances at a computer screen and notes that cell block contains a very very VIP that was to be executed at Tarkin's command. What troops would you decide to send after the infiltrators? Stormtroopers.
