Labyrinth of Ruin (next expansion)

By Frog, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Finally, the older brother of our Lava Beetles has been revealed! ;-)

It was not at "Spiel" in Essen, but at the Toy Fair Trade in Nuremberg (Germany).

I wonder when we will hear more information about this.

my guess would be new york toy fare, it is in a couple of days….

I note that there appear to be three heroes on the box (that I can see.) Historically, whether or not the heroes on the box art are actually in the game is hit-or-miss. The 2E core box pictures a bunch of heroes who are not apparently in the game, but the Lair of the Wyrm expansion pictures the two specific heroes who were added in that expansion. The same kind of pattern (or lack thereof) was true with 1E.

However, the presence of three heroes (rather than two) on the box suggests to me that this expansion may not be a simple "Green/Blue" expansion, like LoW was "Red/Gold." Unless maybe one of them is just an NPC in one of the quests or something.

It may be a larger expansion, on par with the core box; but if it includes classes for all four archtypes then it would still be leaving scouts and healers a class "behind," which seems odd. Perhaps it just contains new heroes but no new classes .

Or, perhaps the heroes on the box are unrelated to the content and it is a simple "Green/Blue" small box like LoW after all. I guess time will tell.

Or perhaps I'm just drooling over the box for too long and rambling about nothing relevant at all. =P

Either way, it's an exciting announcement. =)

i think the guy is a npc. he looks like he needs recusing from the gigant bug. so this will be the green/blue one

i think we will see the "big box" expansion at gencon.

The girl on the cover with that potion in her hands might be some kind of alchemist (I guess healer class).

The orc seems to be some kind of scout/ranger or maybe a nomad (apparently ranger class).

The third person on the cover seems to be dead very soon ;-) (I agree, most likely a NPC)

I really hope that at some point they come out with more skill cards for each of the existing classes as opposed to just more classes for each hero type. Would be better to have a greater variety of skills to pick from using any gained experience.

But I am really looking forward to anther expansion, no other dungeon crawler has captured my imagination like this since Games Workshops Warhammer Quest.

(I have even started to collect the 1st edition stuff, although currently only have the main box set, finding the expansions especially in a good condition is quite hard)

What is meant by "blue/green" and "red/gold"?

Most of FFG's expansions don't require anything more than the base game box to be used. That means if they were to release additional class cards for existing classes, it wold only be for the 8 base-game classes, which is obviously going to rile up anybody who likes an expansion class.

While it's not unheard of for them to release an "expansion expansion" for some of the longer running game lines, it doesn't generally happen until said game has at least 6 or 8 other expansions under its belt.

Personally, I'd rather just see rules for "multi-classing" as a way to continue character growth beyond what's currently obtainable. Of course, that would have to come along with some kind of Act III/IV structure, otherwise the heroes would be WAY too powerful for anything the Overlord could dish out.

It's a reference to the colours of the archetypes which got new classes/heroes in an expansion. Lair of the Wyrm is "Red/Gold" because it gives us a new Warrior and a new Mage class. The oft hypothesized "Blue/Green" expansion (which Labyrinth may or may not prove to be) would give us a new Scout and a new Healer class.

Ah, got it. Thanks for clearing that up Steve-O.

I've so looking forward to this. Looking like more bugs monster group's in this one :)

That's a great news. I wonder when will we see any info about this and when will it hit stores? I hope that May/June 2013 is the date. That would be great.

Exciting news indeed.

Looks like there's gonna be a huge Crab Boss (cool!) and Orc Hero.

I think it will look similar to Lair Of The Wyrm. We will get not so big box, 2 heroes (this time a Scout and Healer Type) and some more plot cards. Especialy I'm excited to see what the new classes will be and it look like theres going to be a Orc Ranger hero and a Gnom Healer. And the monsters will big huge bugs - YUPI! Can't wait for the official announcement and the release (it looks like it will be in 2Q 2013).

Cheers

And she's holding … a "Holy Hand Grenade"?

She's definetely wearing goggles …

We will see and we will play!

Holy cow! I haven't even had a chance to play Lair of the Wyrm yet! Exciting, but I'm falling behind!!! Man, I wish there were this many expansions to Wiz-War!

OMG, I can't wait! So many new things… take my money!

WOW1 I just readed all there is from the announcement and I'm so excited. The best thing is that it is a full campain so a big box! 4 Heroes, new Overlord cards, new monsters, new quest and a campain, new artifacts and allies and new map tiles. Everything is new there so give me it! Can't wait, let's hope to see it as soon as 2Q will start. This is a great announcement and it made me happy this day!

Thanks FFG!

Cheers

PS. It looks like after the Labyrinth Of Ruin we will get a small box like Lair of the Wyrm. So this year we should have two expansions. I will keep my fingers crossed for that.

I'm pretty stoked about this expansion actually. My biggest *whoop* came at new dice actually. Adding just one more type gives a lot of diversity.

I'm now wondering if:

  1. The 'overland map' will be the same as base set campaign
  2. Will we see a 'Road to Legend' type expansion that actually links the existing CAMPAIGNS together to form one huge 'game'. Adding in Acts 3, 4, 5, 6, beyond, the works
  3. When will the two remaining classes get filled out, and what else will that expansion add
  4. Will they add more skills to existing classes/a 'generic' pool of skills that anyone could use, instead of adding more and more classes. Personally, I don't feel we need a choice of 10 classes in each archetype - diversity WITHIN that class is better from my perspective.

So…many…questions… :)

It's a BIG Box …

so it will leave a BIG hole in my wallet …

1) Probably NO. ("The comprehensive campaign in Labyrinth of Ruin features nineteen narratively rich quests. While they can be enjoyed as standalone experiences") A new overland map is likely to happen

2) no, for the quotation abothe
3) probably in another mini expansion like lair of the wyrm, this one is a big expansion , and will probably feature 4 new classes ("new heroes, monsters, classes, and more!")
4) probably new classes, not adding something to the old classes, for the same reasons as in 1)

The heroes have no plans of sitting idle as the overlord unfolds his vile plot; hero players benefit from the addition of four brave new characters and four versatile new classes . The mighty Beastmaster is a hunter of unparalleled skill, and with his loyal wolf at his side, he’s prepared to stalk his prey through any wilderness.

Meanwhile, the avaricious Treasure Hunter may excel at claiming wealth and uncovering relics, but he’s more than capable of defending himself – and his newfound riches – should his situation demand it.

Those drawn to the esoteric ways of magic may prefer the Hexer, a “de-buffing” class capable of making overlord’s minions pay for every step they take. With an arsenal of plagues, curses, and other afflictions at his command, the Hexer is a grim reminder of that even the most objectionable forms of magic can be used in the name of good.

Finally, the versatile Apothecary is a walking treasure-trove of elixirs, tonics, and other concoctions. It would be foolish, however, to assume that the Apothecary is a mere peddler of potions; many a foe has made that mistake, only to find themselves choked with poison gas.

Soooo happy. After seeing that the game wasn't being sold in Walmart or Barnes & Noble, was worried the game wasn't selling well enough to justify another expansion. FFG, please get ontop of your distribution so this game can get the fanbase it deserves!

Do you regularly use Walmart as your rule of thumb for where to buy "good board games?"

Not that there's anything wrong with shopping at Walmart or Barnes & Noble, but it's been my experience that stores like that carry only a fraction of the board games that are available to buy. Furthermore, the ones they do carry are usually "mainstream" titles like Monopoly, RISK, and occasionally HeroScape.

There's a whole world of board games beyond those, none of which are selling "poorly" by any means, to be found at your Friendly Local Gaming Store.
