Corp Identities

By Damocles, in Android: Netrunner The Card Game

So I have been a tad disappointed with the new Corp identities that we have seen so far in terms of flavor and art. Obviously it is still really early in the game and they are ramping up for more interesting and derivative stuff later, but I still kinda think that just making the logo glow a little bit and changing the tag line is a bit of a cop out.

I'm hoping to start seeing Corp identity cards that have things like management personalities on them, like the CEO or the Director of Security or some such nonsense, or a Sub-Contractor of that company, like a defense company that works with Wayland maybe, or the Advertising division of NBN or something.

What do you think? What would you like to see in the future?

While the HB Identity certainly needs something to help it, I think the Jinteki Identity is certainly interesting and makes for a much different game.

As far as the Identities, "Megacorp" fits the theme perfectly. You are playing a faceless corporation, it does not have individual identities in it. People should be nothing more than resources / upgrades….just like we're seeing in Humanity's Shadow.

Given that we're dealing with a game of cybercrime, I doubt that the Corporate identities would end up being MDs or CEOs. Now specialised Sysops that can install only to R&D or HQ, and give broad Identity-like abilities, such as the 'NBN CIO', perhaps, that might be cool. Unique of course, possibly with "only one in a deck' perhaps, because they so rarely take personal interest in the affairs of the Runners.

I do like the faceless Corp vs the personalised Runner identities dichotomy, it brings out the lone gun versus the industial megacomplex feel. Changing up the tagline and tweaking the logo? Well that's just the latest advertising brochure, you know? Got to keep the Advertising Execs feeling like they're making a contribution to the company as well, eh? ;p ;p ;p

I would have to agree with the responses thus far. It is clear that the intent was for corporoations in Netrunner to be faceless entities; an unseen threat with seemingly infinite resources, which does not live or die on the existence/success of any one individual… or something like that. To add identities which represent specific figureheads within the corporations would ruin the theme entirely.

Now, it's not unlikely or illogical to have assets that represent said individuals enter the game at some point. It would have to be assets of course, because assets are more important than upgrades, right? burla

As far as the art goes, I am a bit disappointed that the images for the two new Corp identities thus far use the same art effect, rather than having a different look that is unique to each Corp.

Yeah, the art was a bit of a letdown. I was hoping that we might see interesting variants of each of the logos, like how Pepsi keeps reinventing its circle thing, but instead they just threw a couple of lens flares on them? Weak.

I do agree that that the most thematic approach is one in which the corporation is maximally monolithic and faceless, and also it would be pretty weird if the only way to be in charge of the entire Weyland consortium is to use the core identity, and if you play with one of the other sets you only represent the VP of Personnel or some aerospace contractor or whatever (who for some reason is just as powerful and has access to all the same resources).

megalithic

Also, any smaller corporate units in the game, even if bigger than any one individual, appear already as assets, like Melange Mining Corporation. As far as in-game scale is concerned based on the cards we have, anything less than a megacorp is just a single card.

Allso even Megacorps are faceles, they usually have a figurehead just for commersial purposes. Balmer, Jobs etc… Who may not have real power, but are important part of marketing and/or usefull scapegoat :-) When something goes horribly wrong…

But yeah, different images or styles would be nice allso for corps but like Windows or Apple logo, it can not change too much. It could hurt the busines imago and render past achiement in image building to null…

I understand the whole "faceless megacorp" idea that they are trying to portray, but even if you read all the supporting fictions, like Philip K. ****, or Gibson, they, at some point, have to give faces to the monolithic forces arrayed against the protagonist, or it just doesn't work as a story. Obviously this is a card game, but I still think the same principle applies.

I could see having corporate personalities being really awesome assets or upgrades, maybe like the runners console, they fundamentally change the way a player might play. However, it looks like we are going to get a new Corp identity with every new runner identity, so unless they keep just changing the tag line and slapping sunbursts over the logos, they are going to have to do something interesting with the Corp identities at some point, so which direction do you think they might go?
