More noob questions - Which is better Spearmaiden or Cat o' the Canals?

By yaki2100, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi All,

Thank you very much for your former comments and help.

Today questions:

1. Which is better? Spearmaiden or Cat o' the Canals?

2. If I'll use a plot Valar Morghulis, Cat o' the Canals will not be protected but spearmaiden will?

3. If i understnad correctly, using Cat o' the Canals will prohbit me the use of wilfire assault and Valar Morghulis, am I correct?

Best,

Y.

1. Well, one is a canceller and the other one is just immune, right? Sure Cat is cheaper and has one more icon, but she can't cancel nor does she have stealth (though she's immune to stealth). But everything depends on your needs. I prefer Spearmaiden since there is little or no cancelling in LCG at the moment as far as I know.

2. Cat as you know is only immune to opponent's card effect so she's a gonner if you throw down a Valar while you control her.

Your Spearmaiden cannot be protected as well in case of Valar since it does not target her.

Wildfire plot on the other hand has the word choose, so you can chose to protect her from that event since it's a response. However, if you were to activate her response you are cancelling the Wildfire that you were just plunking down.

3. Not getting exactly what you are asking, but to reiterate the above point: Cat is immune to your OPPONENT's card effects including plots like Valar and Wildfire, but not your own. Spearmaiden on the other hand does not care whether a card effect comes from you or your opponent as long as you are able to use her ability (no card effect that trumps and prohibits her from doing so), it targets her, it's cancellable, and you chose to do so.

As always: Thank you ktom!

edit: forgot that Valar does not target specifically, thanks eloooooooi!

P.S. You should try posting rules question in the rules forum next time, mike2008.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Spearmaiden can cancel an effect that choses her as a target. Valar Morghulis doesn't choose her, it just kills all characters in play. There's no choose in its text. Thus, Spearmaiden cannot cancel Valar Morghulis.

The other thing to keep in mind is that when Spearmaiden cancels something like Wildfire, it is canceled for everyone, not just you. No one would lose any characters.

As to which is better, I'm personally don't think there is a direct comparison simply because they can each weather certain plot effects. Here's the thing: Cat is better at protecting herself from your opponent's attempts to do her in than Spearmaiden because she ignores everything and Spearmaiden can only cancel things that target her. However, Spearmaiden can extend that "protection" to other characters for blanket effects that target her somehow. So they don't really fill the same slot in a deck or a strategy, meaning that which one is "better" depends on the slot you're trying to fill, not on the character itself. Just MHO, of course.

Does anyone else ever get threads stuck as "new" even after you've read them? I've seen this particular glitch twice now in the past week (including this thread).

The problem goes away if somebody posts again in the thread. But without additional postings, the thread stays "new" forever and ever. Which really annoys the OCD part of my personality.... sad.gif

Yes, i had the same experience with this thread, but didn´t know that a new reply would help to solve the matter. It´s irritating when you use the blue FFG flag to see if there are new posts on a board. And interesting enough the "mark all topics as read" button won´t help too.

Additionally since a week so, it happens that i´m sometimes routed back to the FFG forums after replying to a topic, which is slightly annoying if you just want to browse the AGOT boards section.

I have a different bad experience with these boards. Usually when I start new topic or reply to someone, then I dont see the "new" mark there after someone else replies. It happens all the time at it is slightly annoying when I have to check even the not "new" topics and remember where I posted something to keep track of the replies.

I think it was I who caused this thread to go bad:

I was testing out the edit function by keeping the page loaded for the whole night...and tested the edit button the next day. Editing worked, but it kept the thread as "new" for me too ever since....which was annoying until the new post by Arma that reset the whole topic.

You were marked as the last person to post but that post you were editing all night never showed up. Couldn't be read and therefor the server said there was an unread (though not visible) post... *shrug* I suppose you could be responsible... though if the forums weren't so quirky and fragile it wouldn't be a problem.
