Lair of the Wyrm - Campaign Order Question

By Trinket, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Good Evening,

My gaming group has completed 3 quests so far in 2nd Edition (A Fat Goblin, Castle Daerion, and The Cardinal's Plight) and I was wondering the best time to introduce the expansion into the game.

I've already integrated all of the various cards and monsters and have used the Fire Imps already (love the burn!).

1. Should we start into the expansion before the interlude, after the interlude or after the completion of the finale? I'm not a fan of the rumer cards.

On the FFG support website it says "Transition to Act II: Follow the instructions for “Act II” listed on page 22 of Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition rulebook." which I inferred to mean that it should be played before the interlude.

2. Has anyone had any luck running this as a mini campaign unto istelf?

3. Any announcements on when they might be releasing the next expansion?

Thanks!

Trinket

The rumor cards are how the quests get played from the expansion into the Default campaign. I believe the rules state to start from the beginning of the campaign, but I don't see any reason you couldn't begin midway - its just allowing the ability to add more quests (albiet, without XP gained) to the campaign.

I'm sorry, I didn't explain my position properly. I want to run this as a "Mini-Campaign" as described by the addendum rules issued after the fact without the use of "Rumor Cards" as they seem like a clunky addition.

The question is whether or not I should run this set of quests before the interlude, after the interlude, or after the campaign has concluded. What I worry about is that the difficulty of the monsters may be too high for the heroes to conquer or conversely if I give them the xp associated with the quests- it might unbalance the interlude and finale.

I doubt a clear answer exists. I only know how three ways to play Lair of the Wyrm :

  • As stand-alone quests using the basic or epic play rules.
  • Integrated into the Shadow Rune campaign using Rumor Cards.
  • As a campaign consisting of Lair of the Wyrm quests only.

There aren't any rules which describe how to slot a complete Lair of the Wyrm campaign arbitrarily into a Shadow Rune campaign.

I am guessing that because each of the Lair of the Wyrm quests can occur at any point in the campaign using a Rumor Card, it doesn't matter when you begin playing Lair of the Wyrm , keeping in mind that three of the five Wyrm quests should only be done during Act I, and the last two during Act 2. Therefore I don't think you will be able to string together all five Wyrm quests without some balance issues.

Thanks for the answer! That certainly is disappointing. Hopefully new expansions that come out will be true extensions of the campaign instead of supplements to the campaign.

Any word on when the next expansion will be coming out?
