Distinct Mastery with Kings in the North Loop

By Silvirine, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi,

I'm new to the game and I need someone experienced to help me with the following:

We have 2 card in Stark's deck: Distinct Mastery(S 177,Core Set) and Kings in the North(S 157, Core Set).

: Distinct Mastery : Any Phase: Choose and stand a Holy, Learned, Noble, or War character

: Kings in the North : Response: Play after you win dominance. Kneel 2 of your House Stark characters to have them claim 1 power each.

Is it possible that after winning Dominance Stark can use this 2 cards untill he gets 15 power? Or " Response: Play after you win dominance." restricts from playing it again in Dominance?

Thank you!

Because Kings in the North is a response to your winning dominance it can only be used during the response step after dominance is counted.

Distinct Mastery is an any phase action, thus would not be playable for this combo as the response window would already be closed for the KitN trigger.

Not sure if KitN falls under the "one trigger, one play" category, either. If not, there are other ways of using more than one to amass up to 7 power for dominance.

I think you're missing a couple things. There are at least two reasons why there's no "loop" here - a timing one, and a "responses per trigger" one.

First of all, after an event is played, it heads to the discard pile (with the exception of the Keyword "Deathbound"). The effect on it is only triggered once.

If you had 3 Kings in the North in-hand, you could play them all in the response window to "winning dominance", assuming you had 6 standing Stark Characters, but you could NOT trigger the same "Kings in the North" effect off a single card multiple times. If you could trigger the same card's effect multiple times off a trigger, a card that says "After you win a military challenge, claim 2 power" (Seige of Winterfell) would allow you to instantly win the game after winning a military challenge! This rule is, as alluded to beforehand, known as the "1 response per trigger" (although technically it's one instance of *that* response on *that* card per trigger).

If you had 3 Distinct Masteries, you could stand 3 (crested) characters in any player action window - but player actions are not the same things as responses.

If you look at the timing charts in the FAQ you'll see that the dominance phase consists of first

"Dominance Phase Begins" (Framework Action)
>Here is where passive effects that trigger by dominance (or a phase) beginning would be triggered, followed by Responses to dominance beginning
"Reward Dominance" (Framework action)
>Here is where you can have passive effects triggered by winning dominance, followed by responses to winning or losing dominance (Eg: Kings in the North)
"Player Action Window"
>This is your first (and only) opportunity this phase to use "Any Phase:" or "Dominance:" abilities, like Distinct Mastery
"Dominance Phase Ends"

Hi, thanks for reply

I found out that we weren't discarding event cards after using its effect. Sorry for inconvenience
