Tactic but no target

By Junglecat, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Could I play a tactic that targets an attachment card even if there are no attachment cards in play? Gotta get some spells in that discard pile to lower the cost of Star Dragons don't ya know…

Well, that's general and I don't want to give bad advice (knowingly), but I'd say no. To use a card that says "target" there almost always has to be a target. But there are always exceptions.

If the card said

"Action: Destroy target attachment" Then no, you cannot play that without a target.

If the card said

"Action: Draw a card. Then you may destroy target attachment" Then yes, you could.

So if the tactic has 2 parts in it and you can legally do at least 1 on those parts, then you can play it. But like your first example, there's only one target and since there isn't a legal target then you can't play it. Do I have it right? By the way, your first example was dead on.

That depends on the wording of the card in question. In HappyDD's second example, "Action: Draw a card. Then you may destroy target attachment.", you must fulfill the first part of the action (drawing a card), before you have the opportunity to destroy an attachment (which you don't have to do, since it is worded "may"). But you always have to have legal targets to use an action which requires them, and they must also be legal at the point of resolution.

Can I ask which card it is you are referring to?

I don't have it handy but I believe it was the HE tactic "Vaul's Unmaking". Text box states something like "Destroy target attachment". Which, as I now understand, wouldn't be playable as there were no attachments in play at the time.

Thanks for the help fellas. I think I have it now.
