Tech-Priests and Fellowship

By bogi_khaosa, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Tech-Priests in the core rulebook (the only book I own) are listed with N/A in the stat advancement slots for Fellowship. Technically I suppose this could mean that Fellowship is free aplauso.gif , but I am assuming it means the opposite and that Tech-Priests cannot improve their Fellowship. OK, I can go with that.

However, there are several Talents they can receive, most noticeably the various Peers, that require a minimum Fellowship. It seems a little counterintuitive that a Priest who starts out with a Fellowship of 29 can never, ever, acquire Peer or Good Reputation Talents, especially a Magos Errant whose job is gallavanting around the galaxy preaching the creed.

Has this been addressed in the IH or elsewhere? Or have I missed something? If not, what do you guys think? Thanks!

Personally I don't like this rule and I think that Tech adepts should be able to boost their fellowship just like anyone else. However I also think that they should half this stat when they are dealing with anything but other tech adepts.

I came up with an idea that a Tech Priest would receive a +10 bonus Fel for each true flesh upgrade (that who they were dealing with knew about) when dealing with other members of the AdMech.

But then nobody in my campaign has rolled tech priest yet, ho hum

Exactly, Tech-Priests barely-human cyborgs who destest the company of outsiders. They also precieve things like human emotion as a weakness and will actually have those parts of thier brain removed so they can be more machine-like. A preaching magos isn't trying to make friends, he's telling everyone that if they don't show proper respect he will kill them.

If anything thier Fel shoud go down as they gain experience

Oh no. That's clearly not the case. Tech-Priests will only accept, at the bare minimum, moderately likable fellows into their ranks. If someone can't quite grasp the necessities of social interaction and display that extra bit of pizazz, then they will always been a lesser member, beneath all other "true" tech-priests. I know this to be true because it clearly states in the book that a Tech-Priest has to have a Fel of at least 30 in order to get Peer (Adaptus Mechanicus) and, as such, be seen as an equal amongst the tech-Priests.

Some things that are found in the rules just need to be ignored or else things will get fairly recockulous rather quickly. ;-) I am in the camp that believes the Tech-Priests Fel is fine the way it is. However, the pre-reqs. for Peer and Rep talents relating to Tech-Priests for other Tech-Priests should be ignored.

Or you could allow Tech-Priest to raise Fellowship (500/750/1000/2500) but only the allow the raised fellowship to count when interacting with other adeptus mechanus.

The temptation exists to change the prerequisites for Peer and Good Reputation (Adeptus Mechanicus) (and only the Mechanicus ones) to Int instead of Fel.

It fits with rulings I've already made, where otherwise the average Techpriest will struggle to interact with vending machines, let alone other techpriests:

Binary Chatter (Revised Talent)
Your body has been modified to speak and interpret the binaric cant of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the primary form of speaking the language known as ‘Tech’. This allows you to interact more proficiently with servitors, granting a +10 bonus on any test made to instruct, program or question them. Further, if you have the Secret Language (Tech) skill, you may communicate with any other character possessing that skill and the Binary Chatter talent in the binaric form of Tech, allowing swift transfer of information and more complex interactions in a shorter space of time. This means that you may use the Logic skill as if it were Inquiry only when interacting with characters possessing the Binary Chatter talent who are able to speak Tech.
