Am I missing something?

By Luftwaffe Flak, in Tannhauser

I picked up this game awhile back because it was from FFG and the minis, I even built 3d walls for it, but once it got to the table it was just a dicefest...there was no real objective it seemd but rather blow up your enemies then take what you want. We were playing correctly, but it just seems to lack something in its mechanics and I cant quite put my finger on it.

Yep -- I've heard similar comments.

Guh. I still have to make up some zombie stats for this game... :D

yea it is sorta like that but its still a very fun game :)

Yup sort of like that, but if you are just playing shoot 'em up it is only like that, play a scenario there is a different element to it, or capture the flag.

yea personally i prefer to play domination capture the flag and story mode so it usually doesnt feel like a dice-fest

Who plays CTF??? lol I use my flags and objective tokens as tokens for new downloadable ones or bonus tokens of the month but yeah I'm a deathmatch guy havin 5 people around the table is one awesome experience

5 people sounds really good. I played the game only with one opponent. I think it would be a nice experience to try it also with 5 (or maybe even with 10!?) players... gran_risa.gif

I always played with 3 other guys ... and we enjoyed it. but we prefer to play not deathmatch....

If I read the comments on this topic I think that nearly everyone thinks the same. The theme is cool, I bought this game mainly because of the them. I like hellboy and I thought that this game would capture the spirit of this paranaormal paraunivers quite well. But as everybody else allready said, tis game is sadly only a dicefest. I always play the storymode because you get the illusion that there is something more behind this game. And I don´t actually see the "greatness" of the pathfinding system.

I hope that the add on´s (novgorod) will bring more sense in this game. But on the other hand I get "angry" to allways buy expansions. That make me feel that the original game wasn´t finished or that the original concept didn´t work so good.

Another thing I have to complain about is the list of erratas (not only Tannhäuser). It´s good to have the internet but I wish that there would be releases that weren´t full of erratas. That gets on my nerve. You pay a lot of money for the games (and I have quite a lot of them because I love this stuff so much) and in return you expect a good editing.

Another thing I have to complain about ist the "typical" chaotic layout of the rules or to be precise the missing of summary of essential rules for a quick look up. You allways have to go through the rules for and back to find an important rule, and after a while a notice that you played the game wrong because you missed an essential part of the rules because you just overread it. (this iconcerns esspecially Arkham horror)

i have a very big collection of games and this is by far the best one in it. and the pathfinding system is amazing and the only thing that bothers me about this game is the slow releases but everyone has their own opinion serio.gif

Yes, I also like the game very much. It is definitively not the best but I like the theme and the easy way of playing. As Derros said the only thing I really hate is that the releas of expansions is as slow as possible. Shure, I am from germany but the release of the game is the same like in the states. So if FFG say it is 2009, in germany it will also be at this date. And 2009 is a long period of time.

I too like this game...when I went in I kinda knew that despite the Pathfinding system (which I think is genius when implemented right), it was going to lean more towards a simplified board game (i.e. read dice fest) than something more substantial in a way of skirmish level game. The theme is awesome, and I would love to see a full blown skirmish tactics game (which I hear is in the works in France)...but for now knowing this is a simple engine, I get my fix of paranormal alt-WW2 just fine. It's like wanting to play a WW2 combat game...you could go Axis and Allies (simple)...or Tide of Iron (not as simple) or ASL (insane).

You mean Cerberus? Hopefully it will be released by FFG too..

i think the game is more of a boardgame-ego-shooter....much fun if you can enjoy killing your enemies fast and bloody :)

There is much more to it than that, if that is the only way you have played then you have only been play 1 dimension of a multi dimensional game.

A lot of chess playing is involved as well, granted most tactics have been figured out in my group with only 2 maps, but all we can do is guess which one they are using with the large amount of tokens available. There is a lot of placement involved with tactics, planing ahead, there is much more than just shoot 'em up.

If that is the way you are playing then yeah I can see how it is boring, but my group thinks about the battle and the map before and during.

Union players in my group have tried shoot 'em up builds, just throwing in the bigger better weapons. That has given the union a total record of 7 wins and 53 losses in the manor map, and 18 wins and 32 losses in the catacombs. (most wins have come after they have changed tactics, but think it is too late come December the 150 dollar pot will belong to the Reich ;) )

The only map which the union has been successful in shoot 'em up builds in the out door map 5 wins 1 loss.
