I'm red / green color blind, but also love painting miniatures. It becomes very difficult for me to match colors and values from photos and pictures. The way I get around it is to get the paint color names and parts ( ie . GW Scorched Brown for the uniform straps) and I take it from there. Get pretty good results so far.

What I could REALLY use is some information on what colors to use for SSU (just got me a 450 pt army), Allies and Axis for the main uniform components. Referencing any brand name paint is fine, Games Workshop, Vallejo, whatever. Once I know what colors to paint the clothes, hats, gloves, packs I can complete these guys without creating an oddly colored army.

Could someone kindly post or email [email protected] me this list?

As someone who is also colorblind (and as it sounds, even moreso than BrooklynMike), highlighting isn't much of an issue. Normally when I highlight I just use a pigmented shade of the same color I used for the basecoat. A lot of times I wind up basecoating everything, then using an ink wash for creating depth and shading, then follow that up with another basecoat and finish with a lightened basecoat color or I'll drybrush.

The bigger problem for me than highlighting is just finding good color matches. When you're never really sure what the actual color looks like to "normal" people it makes it hard to find good color matches. Normally that's why I paint my models in more neutral colors, I never try to get too creative, I just stay in my wheelhouse.

*Funny side note, it took 4 months before someone finally broke the news to me that my SSU models come primed green, I always thought they were brown and painted most of my models with that thought in mind, haha.*

Try the Army painter range, its fairly small but has some great colours you could use any of the browns and greys for webbing and for the main uniforms just wash with their Strong Tone, no need for anything else. http://shop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=8

XBeakeRx has it right … hilighting is not the problem, that tends to be just a matter of the base color plus some obvious lightener i.e. more yellow for lighter orange, more white for a black highlight. It's the base color selection that is hard. That's why I love 40K Orks so much … you can pretty much use any color and combination you want and it is not a 'violation' of any uniform scheme.

I just got my SSU army, 2 standard sections, a section of Red Guard, command for same , some specialists, tank, walker, attack helicopter. That's going to keep me busy painting for some time!

Thank you I did not want my comnet to seem ignorant. So as far as paints I look at the Flames of War books that you can access online to get my colors from. They have great info in all their books for various armies and its free on their wedbsite. If you pick some base colors let me know and i can help you find a nice highlight color for them.
