Im not a fan of the metal starblazers minis, the proportions are off in most cases and the new original ships look like they were designed by someone who had never seen a Yamato episode. The only ones that even come 'close' to looking right are bad conglomerations of the Arcadia and some general weirdness that i dont recognize. Which is sad since i love the Arcadia (and even sadder since in our game we had to stop after what would have been the 'first season' of our alternate Matsumotoesque adventure as we didnt have any of my Mechanized Empire ships ready. They were going to be the next enemy, during the fighting of which my character was going to end up the Harlock of the show and i had designed one of my best ships for it *L*) The only advantage of metal is of course that small fins are easier to do, or at least not as delicate.
Once FFG runs out of Star Wars ships to make would you like to see fighters from other SciFi universes added to the mix?
What Shapeways material do you recommend getting the models done in? If we decide they should indeed be about 15MM long, won't the strong and flexible plastic be fuzzy as wuzzy?
The better material is FD or FUD.. they come out clean and don't have the 'fuzzy' look of WSF.. down side.. more expensive.. but if its a small part not too bad.. I got a Z95 and a T16 from there in FD and am very happy with them.. next time might get FUD just for the finer detailing..
I havent seen a lot of difference between frosted detail and frosted ultra, and Frosted detail is a little sturdier though.
Joe - You shouldnt assume 15mm, i will try my best of course but it might be beyond my level to make them that small and still be good enough to make available. And as with all my ships, especially with Matsumotoverse ships i will not make them available if they are not good enough
These are 1.25 inches according to the info I have found at a few sites.
Your own "about an Inch" models are just as nice, so is there a problem with making these so that they look good at X-Wing scale and 1/1000 fleet scale? Is the detail going to go away or will the models just not print up if they are that tiny?
Like I said in other postings I am going to wait to get the 1/1000 scale models in my hands before I worry to much or spend any money. It may be that I can get the models done on a Profactory machine that can print out 15 to 20 milometer ships in a good material that can be low temp cast and then produced in white metal.

The 1/1000 scale Space Battleship Kirishima is 205mm (8.0') long and it can hold a 1/1000 scale Cosmo Tiger in each of it's side bays.

Do what you can my man...

it is a matter of striking a balance between detail and durability. i could do all the fins and antennae etc on the small fighters easily enough but WSF has a minimum safe print thickness of 1mm (actually .7mm, but occasionally that can be rejected. 1mm goes through with no problem) and that puts limits on how sleek the fighters can be. the FD and FUD have lower thickness limits but are more fragile so i could have a .3mm antennae but it would break as soon as someone looked at it. There is a reason my capital ships tend to be between 4 and 6 inches long *L*
But i will do my utmost.
I would love original Galactica on a decent scale, The original Viper and Raider are still 2 of my favourite fighters though it is awkward that the Original series Cylon Raider is so much bigger than the Viper. that would cause a problem with any 1/270 release of BSG ships if they intended to stay in some semblance of scale.
I was just reminded of it while watching the Hand of God episode scene last night where Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, Cassiopeia and Sheba are all standing or sitting in the Raider cockpit while chatting away with a ton of room to spare
Well that explains much. I think you can do anything. 1mm is huge in this scale. I think that fine detail is the only material that can work on these ships. ALL of the white strong and flexible looks like a fuzz monster...you could not give that crap to me for free. The detaile goes in to sand land.
As you say it is a balance. The Bandai people over do the fine details, and the models still look good, I mean these are tiny ships that will be in mass on swarm bases, like that image I posted of the blue Cosmo Tigers. Check this out, here you can see the pair of Cosmo Tigers that come with EDF fleet set II, this is the same sexy little kitty that was in the side bay hanger a few post above.

The company responsible for the entire range over the years says "yeah make 'em fat in the fins." too...good nuff.

Well...it could hold three big ass bad ass Cylons, so yeah it is fun to think of that in terms of ships on the table. It would be like a fleet of Slave Ones fighting a fleet of X-Wings...well there about. You and I are in the same boat, BSG was the third big deal I discovered as a punk kid, right after I fell in love with Star Wars and Star Blazers...here came BSG.

Sadly BSG would have what, like 7 fighters?
Viper, MkII, MkIII, Raptor
and
Original Cylon Raider, New Raider and the Heavy Raider.
My vote would be for Robotech.
I haven't played Dust but I imagine that it's ground warfare rules would have to be incorporated into the game... assuming the ground and air components are even compatible.
For as much as I love BSG I agree. I want small medium and large ships on my table. With Star Wars you get that in spades! For now, if you convert some of your big ships as many of us working on or have done already, it is hot-****-a-riffic!
In time FFG will have some the main biggies done for us too, and it will be glorious!

With Star Blazers you get this true battle field approach even more, as the battle ships and cruisers fight, often supported by swarms of one to three man fighters doing some serious torping and missiling, but in a very specific way...again just like Star Wars, but with focus on the big ships being the stars.

With BSG...
![]()
You have one beloved battle star and at most three evil meanie base ships, with a million of the same few ships types (in total for everybody) in support.
![]()
That is why I have not fell over myself to buy that absolutely wonderful Pegasus, and the beloved Galactica models yet with a Base Star or three, because there are no in scale fighters to go with them...phooey!
Now if Gossie steps up and pulls some heroics out of his hands and computer and makes us the little ships to go with the Moebius models then I would have to buy a few dozen...but not until I get this Star Blazers deal done.
Star Wars will take care of it's issues in soon-time so it is not as much of a concern for me...but getting everything perfect for this Star Blazers 1/1000 scale project..."It task me!"

I'll take an oar on this boat as well... loved the old series... I did like the new one, but I think I would rather have a game with the old ships.. they were very cool.
Welcome aboard Oneway!

Not to be a complete nerd but Star BUCK ain't a girl...that alone killed me. I will admit that while I have seen much in terms of clips and cast interviews and the like and know enough about the redone BSG, this ended up giving me solid reason to not like it enough to watch the series, after the first few shows I had enough of the blond bimbos, and the wimpy men.

It needed more than updated effects and a decently cool re-imagining of Adama.
So say I me!

I was put off by the female Starbuck, but she did an outstanding job, and she even had a few sit downs with the original guy and got tips on how to play her version.. in the long run I like both, with a preference for the old.. it would have been fun to see a revisioning of the original with all the updated tech to do it with..
Thanks, I am really digging this board, and joined up over at a few maneuvers.. good friendly places to while away my time between games.. lol
The fake angst and the fact that 40,000 years ago in a different part of the galaxy they where were packing Taurus 9mm pistols and wearing Armani suits bugged me.
And the Vipers using machine guns because (according to the creators) "lasers are too Sci Fi" on a show called 'Battlestar Galactica' really annoyed me.
But taking two of my favourite ships and ruining them completely...to quote Dr Smith "Oh the pain, the pain"
But it is true that the number of ships would be a bit limiting and the Raider being so big would be prohibitively expensive.
Personally i wish they had gone with Richard Hatchs version. it was a while ago but if they had done it with budget and a bit later it could have been awesome. The effects are a bit Captain power at this point.

And i count at least three Viper variants and the same number of Raider types

You and your kind are very welcome here. I can use half the fingers on one hand to count the number a bad apples in this barrel. That is a good thing.

I do not hate the new BSG, but I do not love it either...
![]()
Ha, Ha! I saw that cool little video about a year ago...shame it did not get done right.
![]()
That could have been a good restart for the series.. plus with all the old cast members joining in it would have felt familiar still..
Apollo looking at his BIG son Boxy and the Colonials all around getting ready to kick some Cylon ass...yeah that was the way to do it!
I think the new Star Wars films will go this way, which is why they are getting Luke, Han, and Leia back for the first film at least...
It better be great!
![]()
Keeping my fingers crossed for that.. lol
![]()
Now this is a thing I would love to see...it would probably be 2/3 the size of our beloved Falcon, and in a good clean material like FD at Shapeways it would cost a mere $60 a model...
Fix it up Lord Gossie!

I want 5 at $20 a piece...make it happen in Spring 2014!
![]()
WOW.. that's a beaut.... I'd get a couple of those if they were.... less costly.. lol
ill never get caught up at this rate *L* i was thinking of doing original BSG ships at 1/270 but just dont have the time. If you actually do want them i can suggest a fellow designer who is extremely passionate about the originals. Im sure he would love the challeng of doing them in larger scale
