Newbie Question

By player377182, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi all! I just got the game and am starting to figure out the rules - ran into a quandry straight off.

I flip the first mythos card - A gate opens in the witch house and a maniac appears there. I check the movement symbols but there's no match so he stays put (right?).

Okay - first investigator moves - she's got a big bad gun and wants to take the maniac out . So she moves to the space and--

Here's the question--

Does she get to face the maniac (fight him) or does she immediately go right through the gate into the otherworld, ignoring the maniac and leaving him back in Arkham (until she can get back to face him?) and this face the otherworld encounter instead???

Any help is appreciated, or correction if I've messed up in the set up.

Thanks and warm regards,

Dane

1) The Maniac stays. He will only move when his Symbol appears.

2) Remeber the turns phases. Movement (inluding fights) then Arkham encounters (inkluding getting sucked trough gates). So, yes you have to face your maniac or you have to evade him.

You must fight or evade the monster as part of the Movement phase. You are not drawn through the gate until the Arkham Encounters phase (which comes after Movement). When you come back through the gate (during Movement a few turns later), you do not have to fight/evade the monster during the first turn, but on subsequent turns you must fight/evade during Movement as normal (if you and the monster are still there).

Cheers,
Chris

Awesome! Thnx guys!

This rule took me forever to figure out. Even when I played AH at GenCon, the "expert player" told us that we could ignore monsters going into a gate, but that when we came back out, we had to fight or evade the monsters before attempting to close/seal.

For the record, I played Gloria. Before putting down the sixth seal, I had to fight a Warlock and a Dark Young, which I defeated with a bullwhip and a derringer. It was pretty cool. gui%C3%B1o.gif

One more question: Can I close/seal gate during this turn (at the Arkham Encouner Phase) when I come back to the Arkham from the OW?

And do we have any other enocuter after closing/sealing gate (at the same Enocunter Phase)?

Once you have returned from an Other World, your Investigator gains an Explored Token. As long as you're standing on an Explored Token and an Open Gate, you may attempt to close that Gate during any Arkham Encounter Phase. This could be just after the Movement Phase on which you exited the Gate, or any Arkham Encounter Phase on any following turn until the Gate is closed. Note that if you move off the Gate before closing it, you will lose your Explored Token, and have to explore offworld again to regain it.

You do not have an Arkham Encounter after you just closed a Gate at a Location. The Gate Closing Ritual you just performed (Fight Check, Lore Check, Elder Sign, or whatever) replaces the action of drawing an Encounter Card that phase.

Yes, when you return from an Other World location during the move phase, you can close the gate during the Arkham Encounter phase. Closing (plus sealing) is your Arkham Encounter for the turn, so you don't get another one after you've closed the gate.

**Edit**

jgt put it much more eloquently than I.

Thanks a lot, guys!

I never though about it, but could one decide to forego the Gate Closing attempt and select an Arkham Encounter, i.e., hoping to gain clue tokens, and then attempt to close the gate on the next turn?

From the FAQs:

A: An open gate replaces the location where it opens, so while
the gate is open, there is no closed location...

Nope, the gate replaces the location. If you're standing on a gate, and you have an Explored token, your two options during the Arkham Encounters phase are:

  • Attempt to close the gate
  • Do nothing

You couldn't even do special encounters, such as Dissection at the Science Building, because those things are done instead of having an encounter; if you're not having an encounter, you can't take those actions "instead."
