I plan to pick up this game and possibly 2 to 3 expansion ships. What ships would you recommend? Is a second set I'd dice recommended?
Thanks in advance.

id recommend going straight for 2x starter sets. u get a total of 4 tie fighters and two x-wings right off the bat (plus extra set of dice). next id go for one of each of the wave1 expansions: tie advaced, tie fighter, x-wing, y-wing. this gets you all the name pilots including vader and wedge. with this base of ships (6 imperial and 4 rebel) you have plenty of options for running 75-100 point games. you are now able to assemble some respectable 100 pts tournamnet teams such as 3 x-wings + y-wing vs 4-5 tie fighters + vader
In the long run, a second core set could prove more economical than the dice kit. It gives you a spare copy of each of the range and movement rulers and 3 ships.
Are you planning on playing Imperial, Rebel, or the option of playing both.
If Rebel, I would suggest:
2 Core Sets
1 X-Wing expansion
2 Y-Wing expansions
That will give you 3 X-Wings and 2 Y-Wings
If Imperial I would suggest:
2 Core Sets (maybe 3)
3 Tie Fighter expansions (2 if you get the 2nd core set)
1 Tie Advanced
That will give you 7 (or 8) Tie Fighters and 1 Tie Advanced
As I want to play both, and also to promote the game in my local area (including running some story campaigns etc)
I have
4 Core Sets
2 of each expansion
a Millennium Falcon (won at a tournament)
Giving me 10 Tie Fighters, 2 Tie Advanced, 6 X-Wings, 2 Y-Wings and a YT-1300. I have plans to pick up 1 more core set, 1 more Y-Wing and 1 more Tie Advanced.

i have got two y-wing expansions and never played with more than 1 y-wing at a time. getting 2 base sets and two tie fighter expansion packs also lets you build some strong 6-tie fighter teams which include the top tie pilots. its probably a good idea to have enough ships yourself to lend a freind to play against you. sure you can specialise in one faction but to really undetstand this game you need to be able to play both factions. i would advise you not to stick to just playing one faction as you game valuable experience how to beat one faction by playing it yourself.
i have ordered some wav2 ships that will bring my total colletion to 21 ships :
REBEL FORCES: 4x X-Wings, 2x Y-Wings, 2x A-Wings, 1x Millenium Falcon (9 ships)
IMPERIAL FORCES: 6x Tie fighters (2 from wave1 expansion), 2x tie advanced, 3x tie interceptor, 1x Slave1 (12 ships)
In that case you should get,
6 Core sets
2 of each expansion.
This will give you
8 X-Wings
14 TIE Fighters
2 TIE Advanced
2 Y-Wings
you can put in your pre orders now for
2 Millennium Falcons
3 Slave I's
8 TIE Interceptors
10 A-Wings

He's trying to have a skirmish against his kids …. not fight out the whole battle of Endor. lol.
Seriously though, 2 core sets is a great way to go. Gives you 6 ships as a starting point and 2 sets of range rulers etc, so that each side can have their own.
I mostly play with my kids as well. I ended up going the 2 core set route and 2 of each expansion.
That gives us:
6 Tie
2 Tie Advanced
4 X-Wing
2 Y-Wing
I also won the Slave1.
We now have plenty to provide a variety of options for 100pt Skirmishes.
My Plan is to order the Falcon and 2 each of Tie Interceptor and A-Wing from Wave 2..
With retail and online discounts so far we have Spent about $160. Icould have probably done it for $140 or less if I bought soley online, but there is something to be said for supporting the Local retailers. We now have a complete game to play at home or take to the LGS. In this day and age that is not a huge amount to spend on a miniatures game IMO. Not to mention it is tough to put any price on the quality time I have spent over the past few weeks with my 16 and 15 yr old sons who had not showed alot of interest in gaming lately since sports and now girls have become a priority.
Howdy!
2 core sets and 1 each expansion, until you get a handle on the game and the ships ypu like.
