Dark Heresy to Only War (Final Release)

By Plushy, in Only War

I've posted this around a couple of times, but figure that with the release of Only War, this deserve a new thread.

This has been my pet project for the last four or five months. I've converted the Dark Heresy careers into Only War specializations, brought over a large number of talents from all the game lines, made a comprehensive armoury, and even come up with a bit of all-new content (playable Squats, Beastmen, Orks, and Kroot!). It's been a lot of fun to make; my playtest group loved it, and I hope you all wil as well. Criticism is always welcome. Enjoy!

Hi :)

That's really great! Thanks a lot!

I have a few questions though :)

- What about the battle sister any plan to have them converted?

- What about the different career rank, and especially the one that change the cost of the attributes, for example the Templar Calix for Psyker, would that basically switch their aptitude?

Thanks!

>Battle Sisters

They're hard to balance and rather indistinct. I would suggest you make a Cleric and get a Bolter, Carapace Armour, and a bevvy of Hatred talents.

>Templar Calix and other Alternate Ranks

Easily represented by Aptitude changes. You could swap out Knowledge for Offense to make a combat Psyker, or make a similar change to a Tech-Priest to make a Secutor.

my group has been using your conversion rules, Plushy. they are great! So great that i stoped lurking just to thank you.

That's great news! How well has it been working? My group has had rotten luck (every single Psychic Power has caused Perils, despite nobody ever Pushing) but they've had a ton of fun.

I like it a lot, looking forward to seeing the finished Eldar. Perhaps one day there will be some xenos games goin lol.

Good work!

Great work, man! Appreciate all the work you've done.

Brilliant work, if fantasy flight ever does DH 2.0 they should bring you in! :-)

Ugh, I need to work on those Eldar. I have some truly awful rules I wrote for making them using Black Crusade sitting in my private folder, but they're unworkable enough to warrant a total re-write. I'll probably hammer out Orks and Dark Eldar first; they're easy.

Oh man, dream job. You don't even know.

Outstanding work! I was pondering on this the other day, and you saved me a crap load of work. Honestly, I don't even think I could have done 1/10th as good a job!

Just one thing - are you planning on doing a Mind-cleansed origin? If so you could probably pull it off doing almost the same thing you did for Imperial Worlder, except for their talents grant 'Infused Knowledge' with the dark nightmares and trigger-word as drawbacks to balance out giving a Tier 3 talent on creation. Just a thought.

I've really been struggling with the Mind-Cleansed origin. Thematically, I love it; a character with a hidden past and a programmed zeal, prone to crack at any moment… It makes for great RP. But I'm not sure how to implement it.

None of the other origins have drawbacks, and I'm not sure if I want to break that. I'll definitely work on it this weekend!

Is this balanced against Only War? Could you have a mixed party of Guardsmen and Acoclytes?

OW characters will have a lot more goodies from their Regiments, and their starting gear is more powerful; while I'm sure you could use the Medic or Sergeant well, it would be silly to have a Weapon Specialist with his meltagun running with them. I'd give the Acolytes a handful (probably something under 1,000) xp to bring them in line, and perhaps up their gear on a case-by-case basis.

That would be in addition to the starting XP?

I think better gear would be the better option, though. Since the "Acoclytes are balanced because of XP" can be ruined very fast.

That, and letting them get XP to counter act the regiment stuff. Or letting them get the regiment stuff like Support specs do.

If you wanted to use one of these Specializations in an Only War game, you could just treat them like a Support specialization in regards to regimental goodies, then give them 600 starting xp to spend. Extra gear could be easy to figure out; give the Assassin a Toxin Reservoir for his blades or a Red-Dot Sight for his rifle, and make similar additions down the line.

I had a go at "converting" the characters from our DH group to OW using these Specializations.

The DH characters all have about 16 0000 XP, but when converted the Arbitrator ended up having to spend much more XP than the Tech-priest, Psyker and Assassin.

The others ended at around 2 6000 - 28 000, but the Arbitrator ended up at 36 000.

That's quite a big difference. While it might be due to selection of skills and talents, it might also suggest that the Enforcer Specialization needs some work …

Possibly. You're the only party who converted, and I wouldn't expect a perfect translation, really.

Hmm, that isn't right at all now, is it?

Would you mind telling me what he was buying? I'd love to rectify this.

I can send you the .rtc file for Memetix excellent excel character sheet, and you can see all the gory details.

Drop me a PM or an e-mail at tmhr77 at gmail dot com

I assume you didnt change the OW pysker powers, and they're balanced against the ones you made? Would you mind if I used any of your material for my own, non-40k homebrew game?
