Banner for the Dragon

By JCWamma, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

A couple of quick questions regarding how this card works. For reference, it looks like this:

House Targaryen only.
Response: After a character with ambush enters play, attach Banner for the Dragon to that character, if able. (Counts as a Banner attachment with the text: 'Any phase: Discard Banner for the Dragon from play to return attached character to its owner's hand.')

Firstly, if a character that doesn't normally have Ambush is Ambushed in through Dragon Egg, can the card attach to it? My guess is no since once it enters play it no longer has Ambush, but I thought I'd check just in case.

Secondly, if Banner for the Dragon leaves play (having been attached to something), can you trigger Griff's response to return it to your hand since it's in its attachment form at the time? I'm guessing the answer's yes, but wanted to clarify.

Thanks for the help!

To answer your first question, based on the wording of the card, the character must have ambush, but does not necessarily have to be ambushed in. After a character that has the ambush keyword enters play (which of course encompasses "play" and "put into play"), you may attach the banner to them.

As to the second question, I'll let someone else answer that one. As Griff is currently worded, he doesn't actually work. If he checks the card type when it becomes moribund and acts as a replacement effect (pretending his text contains the word "instead"), I believe he would be able to return it, but if he checks it after it's discarded (we'll pretend it's actually an action instead of a response, seeing as the response window is closed after moribund cards leave play), it seems that it wouldn't be able to return him. To be honest though, I don't even know if he would be allowed to act on it if he did work as a replacement effect, so I'll stop blathering and let someone better informed step in.

Thanks very much! Does anyone else have an answer for the second part?

Griff's Response has received errata and works as a replacement effect should work now. It is essentially does the same thing for Targ attachments that the event card "Retreat" does for unique characters.

Since Griff's Response works on an attachment while it is "moribund:discard pile", changing its moribind state to "moribund:hand", it can be used on any (Targ) card that is an attachment at the time the Response is triggered. So, since cards are only attachments when they are attached to something else - no matter what the printed card type is, Griff can be used on Banner for the Dragon.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize Griff was fixed, despite having read the latest versions of the faq. Funny that they didn't change the wording to better conform to other replacement effects (ie. "If an attachment would be discarded, kneel 1 influence to return it to your hand instead") They wouldn't have even had to look far for the template as his chargenda effect is a prime example.
