Tournament courtesies

By Torresse, in X-Wing

So, back on topic. I played at two events that were both pretty good.

At the first event I was up against a player who had only played once before. He was grateful for the rules help, but obviously I couldn't exlplain to him all the rules beforehand. It usually ended up that I would say, "Actually, when you hit another ship you lose your action," and he would say, "What!? That's total garbage!" and get all huffy. I couldn't tell if he believed me or not, but by the end of the match when I beat him he thanked me again for being patient and helping him learn. I just wish he was a little better sport about it.

But he was probably upset (like I was) because the store charged $8 for the event, when they said the week before that they were going to charge $5. That left a really nasty taste in my mouth. Glad I walked away with something. I think they upped the price because they decided to give ALL the new ships away to the participants, which was a pleasant surprise for 5th and 6th place. I tied for 2nd and they used some crazy system to break the tie, which put me in third. I'm not too bummed because the TIE interceptor is amazing, but I'm going to try to go to the other store more often now.

The second event had almost double the participants, and followed the rules of the tournament much better. I only had one real dispute, but it was solved courteously. My opponent moved his ship forward, but had a hard time reaching the end of the template, so he slid it along the last little bit. What he didn't see was that in doing so, he nudged the asteroid out of the way. Then he picked up his TIE and turned it around for his K-turn, but of course, when he set it back down, he could see that he wasn't on the asteroid (anymore). I pointed this out to him, and he was skeptical, but he rolled and took the damage. Later in the combat phase I reminded him that the TIE on the asteroid can't shoot. That's when he said he didn't think he hit the asteroid at all, but he took the damage anyway. So I smiled and let him shoot me. I only killed one of his 7 TIE fighters the whole game, so it's not like it made a difference one way or the other. I'm glad I was able to make a new friend that day, and I hope to play against him more in the future.

I have a friend who is notoriasly bad about claiming he never hit the astroid or he will nudge his ship a little extra. I can never tell if hes oblivious to it all, or if working behind a desk has dulled his hand to eye skills

Overlapping and touching are two different things.

Rulebook pg 17

From the opposite end of the template, move
the active ship backward along the top of the
template until it no longer overlaps another ship.
While moving the ship, adjust it so that the
template remains centered between both sets of
guides on the ship’s base. Place the ship so that
the bases of both ships are touching.

When ships overlap, the moving ship backs along their movement template until it gets to a position where it is no longer overlapping and is now touching. It then also loses its action.

Ships whose bases are touching cannot declare each
other as a target during the Combat phase while
their bases remain touching. As soon as
either of these ships moves away (so that the bases
are no longer touching), this combat restriction no
longer applies.

So, bases may touch without overlapping. Touching restricts shooting (unless you're Arvel). Losing an action only occurs if an actual overlap happens, and the ship cannot travel the full distance of the movement template and has to be moved to a touching position.

This is completely contrary to the FAQ clarifying this exact issue. According to the rules of this game bases are not considered "touching" unless there has been an overlap. This is directly reference in the FAQ

Ah, I guess you could read it that way. So, even if the bases are physically touching, they are not actually considered touching unless the bases have overlapped. Seems odd.

Of note for some people… nothing says that touching = overlapping. Unlike what AlKusanagi suggested, merely having the bases touch is not overlapping. Unless the moving base actually OVERLAPS (ie would be placed on top of) it isn't overlapping.

Sounds like you are a very good sport and would be an opponent I would enjoy playing against. I am brand new player and played one time before playing in kessel run. Everyone there was fantastic! They were courteous and patient with me as a new player. And everyone had fun! Remember people… It's a game. And games are supposed to be fun!
