Questions about gate opening in location encounters

By chaosbird, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi All!

Just started not too long ago, and run into some questions related the 'A gate and a monster appears' encounters... :S
Does this gate opening count as normal gate opening in the Mythos phase?
I mean:

- Will the investigator be drawn through the gate?
- If so then what happens first? Fight&evade the monster/Drawing through the gate?
- If the investigator will drawn through the gate, will he be delayed? Can he draw a new encounter in the Outer World Encounter Face?
- Will the doom track change?
- Also what happens with the monster if the location is sealed and so the gate cannot appear there? Or they are not related in this case?

Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!!

Investigator is sent through to the Other World and is Delayed during the Arkham Encounters Phase, the Doom Track is increased by 1, and then during the Other World Encounters Phase the Investigator has an Other World Encounter.

If the location is sealed, no Gate appears, but the Monster still appears.

Are you sure you can get a monster from an encounter when the location is sealed?

No monster appears if there's a seal on the location. Neither monsters nor gates appear on sealed locations.

I didn't know this rule for the longest time, it's OK.

This is how I play it. The gate opens as result of text on an Location card. Doom token added. Investigator drawn through gate and Delayed. The investigator doesn't have an Other World encounter this turn. Next turn the investigator is no longer delayed but gets no movement points therefore has FIRST otherworld encounter.

DKW.. if I followed what you said the investigator would have 3 otherworld encounters. 1st when drawn through gate and delayed. 2nd when delay is removed but all investigator can do is remain at same location, 3rd when investigator moves into second otherworld area. I'm not sure this is right.

Any clarification?

Don't forget that when a gate opens, a monster also appears, just like when one opens on the Mythos phase. There is one encounter that I know of that merely says, "A gate appears!" without mentioning a monster. ColtsFan thinks it's explicit, and I think it was an oversight. Play it as you will.

This question sure gets asked a lot. And I understand why...

To answer your question, yes—the investigator can expect to receive one more encounter than if s/he voluntarily entered a gate that was already open. This is because of the general rule that getting drawn into a new gate delays you. If it wasn't for that rule, it would be normal to get out of the OW with only one encounter when a gate opens on you on the Mythos phase.

When you're in the Other World during the Other World Encounters phase, you get an encounter. I does not matter if you are delayed or if you entered the OW because of such an Arkham Encounter as you described.

We usually house rule that if a gate opens on top of you in an encounter and you get delayed, you skip the OW encounter that turn. It just feels more right rather than having 3 encounters in the OW.

This question comes up so often, perhaps we should make a thread with clarifications for new players, and sticky it (can we even make sticky threads in this forum?).

Edit: Oops, this was actually meant for the "Combat during movement, entering Gates during Arkham Encounter" question in another discussion, but of course it applies here as well.

Thanks for the answers everyone!

It made things clear!
