Designing a Beginner Game for WFRP3?

By Ceodryn, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Yepesnopes, as an old time fan of WFRP, I agree with you. However, my experience through the past year demo-ing WFRP3 online, and more personally among my family has showed me that new players to the RPG genre don't want to play tarnished chars. They want to play heros.

It makes sense after all. When those new players are kids, they obviously want to shine, like all kids do. When they are adult, they want to escape into a fantasy world, and feel like heroes. I guess that's why Pathfinder is so successful.

Because my goal is get new players to come back to my table, I want them to feel heroic during this first session. I don't want them to feel the weight of the Old World. However, if they do come back to the table and once they know the game is fun, then yes it's my job as a GM of WFRP to bring in that grim and perilious feel. I think just playing WFRP will do that. The corruption, the diseases, the insanities, the criticals will quickly muddy any clean character.

That being said, I don't think the chars in Journey to BFP are that clean. The miner only helped in crafting the shield… For all what we know, he may just have provided the ore and assisted the runesmith. He is also a selfish dwarf who seems to care more about the shield than the missing dwarf party. The slayer is a drunk, who let his brother down and the hunter is bitter at the slayer for it. The agent is maybe the only one pretty clean, but he'll have to walk a fine line between telling the thruth and lying during the adventure.

I also added two characters, a sister of Sigmar, very Paladin-like, but who doesn't realize when she goes too far, and an halfling ch(thi)ef who wouldn't hesitate appropriating himself what the dwarves seek.

Finally, my overal design of the Beginner character folio can be reused for any kind of Beginner character. The latest version I showcased has changed, and I now have my final design. While I created all the chars from Journey and A Day Late, I won't be able to share them until I visit my family. Uploading those heavy PDFs would be a strain on my 3G connection.

Cheers

You are just totally right. You just made me remember my first Warhammer 1 game when I was… very young burla We rolled for characters, I wanted to play a wizard (of course), but the dice decided I should play an herbalist! I still remember my first thought -This game sucks!!-

Obviously, time has probed to me that the game does not suck. But indeed, when you are a kid, you want to play heroes. Good insight Ceodyn.

Hi All,

WFRP3 Beginner Box Project

Above is the link to my dropbox folder where I will keep my final files for my WFRP3 Beginner Box project. I have uploaded character folios for A Day Late, A Shilling Short (4 characters) and Journey to Black Fire Pass (6 characters).

The character folios are meant to be printed on one US Letter Borderless sheet with booklet layout so that page 1 and 2 are together the front, and page 3 and 4 are on the back together. That way, when folded, the folio is the size of ~ a current WFRP3 career card. When opened, the new player (to WFRP3 and RPG) has the information needed for a Beginner session.

The GM will need to provide each players with the appropriate actions, talents and abilities cards, as well as the additional mini-cards (fortune point cards, on which 3 tokens are placed, and race abilities cards). For the basic actions, I also provided a summary of the basic actions, which I have not created (I am sorry, I do not recall who created this summary card).

This is meant to introduce new players to RPG and WFRP3. After the first session, the player can buy advances with the help of the GM, and continue to use this folio if desired, but I didn't make provision for advances. My hope is to transition the players, after a few sessions, to the excellent Gitzman's character sheet.

Cheers

Great Great Great!

I have just checked Valden and the Halfing Cook.

Great use of a map, the Warhammer Introtext, and then a quik reference on what to roll and what the effects are.

This is Great work! I really hope that FFG has some manpower for WFRP to make a 30€ Beginners Box.

Journey to Black Fire Pass IS a great intro adventure. The Charakters mentioned, also with their backgrounds ready to read is great stuff. But the full power of all the action cards, plus the condition cards, talents and stuff was a bit overwhelming for my group.

If I'm going to make an intro for Warhammer in my Citys monthly Roleplaything I will definately use your stuff.

Two dwarven thumbs up!

Thanks Glorian.

I agree that using all actions and talents may be too much in the 1st session. Both adventures could actually be played without the talents and special actions, but just the normal actions. At least the 1st session, and then introduce those cards in the next session. I am also not planning to use the party sheet in the 1st session.

Regarding playing without the talents, when I run it at conventions and/or teach it I just throw some extra "specializations" into the character sheet instead.

Hi All,

Yesterday I tested my Beginner Box Character Folios for the first time with three players who had played once (a year and half ago) and were thus proper beginners. I created three characters adapted to those players, a wood elf hunter for my sister in law, an apprentice wizard for my brother in law, and a dwarf troll slayer for my wife.

Below are two pictures, one of the folios in use at the game table as we are having a rally step break, and one of the entire game table and players. I was running Night of Blood, from the Restless Dead Campaign 1st edition, using Fantasy Grounds 2 as my NPC management/Story board. The only WFRP3 mechanisms I left out was the Party Sheet and Diseases rules, but I used Corruption and Insanities rules.

Folios in play

First time players

What are the black, red and white oval things you have?

I think the crafts shops in my area are terrible compared to anywhere elses. I couldnt even find fake gems, found sticky stuff which mustnt much good

Trollslayerwife for the Win! reir

The Glasspearls can be found in germany from some roleplayshops and or home decoration shops. I have also changed stress and fatigue into blue and red ones.

They were popular in the 90th for counting your 20 Hitpoints at Magic the Gathering.

See, that's what people don't like in a beginner game. They don't want to have to buy the bow AND have to count the arrows. burla

Great pic.

Regarding glass gems, look for acrylic gems for weddings. I buy them at the craft and landscaping shops. We mash pennies for coins.

jh

Similar glass beads can indeed be found at Walmart, Michaels, Johann etc… Those I have however have been directly ordered from amazon or ebay, and are "Chessex gaming stones". I use reds for wounds, blue for stress, yellow for fatigue, white/black for whatever else like recharges, progress tracking initiative, etc.

I find those stones much better than the cardboard tokens provided by FFG (even so those are very nicely drawn) because they are weigthier, and don't move around so easily. I am also using them for Star Wars Edge of the Empire, since they are game neutral.

GREAT PICS Ceodryn !!!! I like the curtain particularly !! reir

My 2 cents on the beads,.. after having tried many different replacements for the cardboard triangles ( we didn't like them AT ALL - too light) our group found what we believe to be "perfect". They are glass beads made for the game of checkers. They are relatively flat and have a very, very ,very thin layer of cork on the bottom. They are just large enough to easily grab, yet small enough to not cover an entire card. When placed on a surface they do NOT move around and the BEST part is that they VERY easily STACK. When you have a Power of 7 or an action recharging with 5 recharge tokens, you simply have a stack of 5 semi-flat glass beads on your action card. Very easy to quickly count, add, and/or remove,…

Looks like you guys had a really great session. I am very curious… How did your relatives react? Did ya hook anyone??

Cheers!

SANY1723_zpsd9ad8b26.jpg

They enjoyed the game, and didn't have any problem to pick up the mechanism of it. As I said, they also had played once, a year in half ago… although today, I am a much better GM with all the experience I got running games through FG2.

Thanksfully, my brother and sister in law just recently moved back close to us, so we will be playing again. Next time, they want to try Star Wars Edge of the Empire, and then we will probably do the next adventure of the Restless Dead campaign.

We aren't playing campaign style, they are not that hooked ;) (and we are all busy with other hobbies) but we basically will enjoy one off adventures here and then.

Has your Mrs attempted to do up her hair in a slayer mohawk? And is it just me, or is your sister in law pointing her bow at your brother in law?

Glad you guys had fun!

:) - Yes and yes. They hopefully didnt play like that or it would have been hard for me to keep my GM neutral voice for 4h!

They are already a bunch of gamers/geeks anyway :)… RPGs is simply something they had never heard of before (on paper that is).

i know you dont want to have magic or stuff outside the core but i just watched the hobbit and i was kind of shocked at how warhammer could easily be used to play a lord of the rings or hobbit game.

Why have an imitation, when you can have the real thing? http://www.cubicle7.co.uk/our-games/the-one-ring/

I have The One Ring and even though I have not PLAYED (just read so far) WFRP 3rd edition, The One Ring does a lot of similar things without all the carzy pieces and out of print dice. In fact, the dice that comes with the game are simply d6s & a d12 with a few symbols on them that remind you of what certain numbers means, but can easlily be memorized and just use any o' d6 or d12.

But, why would you use WFRP 3 to play a less extremem and less magical world? I mean, it is nice to have EVERYTHING in one box set for only $60 (and you can have more than three players), but from what I read with the 3rd edition rules, it's a lot more harsh, over the top and magical than LotRs.

Seriously, tho, The One Ring is ******* awesome if you want to play a game that is true to the Middle Earth books.

Its fascinating seeing pix of other groups and knowing that we're not alone in our… uh, enthusiasm, for gaming :)

Regarding content, I love that we have several hundred scenarios and tons of game content to work with for this system. The world content is also outstanding and is really heavily geared towards the gaming that I like to play: as mean of a world as I make it. Yes, you could use it any game world.

The Enemy Within campaign really capped it for me as well. I'll probably hybridize some original content with the new scenario campaign. Can you beat a 192 page complete campaign with all the content we've already got as GM's, especially consiering all the prior edition content we've got on our plates to draw from for ideas?

Here's the link to the complete WFRP scenario list again. Some of the internet archives will be dead, as GW has put bots on their site, but you can probably find the fan stuff somewhere.

Enjoy!

You know, it sounded like I was ripping on Warhammer. Sorry, I was just saying The One Ring was good… But to me, not as cool as the world of Warhammer (I know, heresy, right?)

No problem. The one ring is a very good game. We steal a lot of ideas for our games from it :)

I tried to get some action started for fan scenarios or MERP translations for it, but there isn't that big of a base forwriters for it yet. Hopefully the latest product get's it rolling. The previous incarnations of lotr games lacked staying power.

You may want to check out the Living lord of the rings scenarios from Tim Creese (Colorado Springs, CO) from when he was running that campaign at conventions of you like that kind of content as well.

Good game.

Of course, I'd like it even more if a friend of mine hadn't borrowed it (hopefully I'll see it again…
