Interest in a Mid-January event in Chicagoland Area

By Tywin2, in 3. AGoT Organized Play

Good Day All,

I just wanted to pose the question and see what kind of response we got. I was thinking about trying to put together an event for sometime in Mid-January in the Chicagoland area. I have a couple venues in mind and a group of 5 or so players locally but was hoping to attract some more interest from the 'community-at-large'. Possible formats would be traditional joust, melee and joust, or teams. This I was planning to leave up for discussion for anyone interested in playing. Let me know what you think and hopefully we can put together an awesome event sometime in the near future.

(On a side note, I would really like to establish a large and active meta in the area as a long term goal, so anyone not interested in an event next month but interested in that possibility, please feel free to chime in as well.)

I can't promise anything, but I can tell you that the central Illinois meta in the Bloomington/Normal area would be interested. We have 3-5 regular players and Chicagoland is just 2-4 hours away. We could come up for the day.

Were any of you guys at Flatcon?

Heh, were you the guy planning Lannister PbtT?

I remember the feeling of being beat down by a deck that I decided not to play because I thought it would not fit the format.

That was me indeed.

Hey so if you guys wanted to make the trip up we could probably field a solid 20. If you wanted you could even bring up you map and we could do a teams melee as well…we have kicked around some interesting format ideas.

Let us know when you have a better idea if you guys can make it up and I will get in touch with a venue to accommodate the numbers and if we are lucky maybe the Alternate Art prize support cards will be ready to go in time.

Where in the Chicagoland area were you thinking of? I am part of a group that has been playing informally at Games-Plus in Mount Prospect, IL about once a month or so. With the new organized play kits I've been think about talking to them about setting something more formal.

I don't want to duplicate efforts if you we're already thinking about talking to them.

Yah sure you betcha.

well, caveats, provisos, etc--

From 1/7-1/25 I'm in training for a new position at my company so if I have to take a Friday off, that's not feasible. But if it's a Saturday/Sunday thing, I'll be there with bells on.

Games Plus was actually one of the venues I had in mind; if you guys already have a group there as well we could really get some good numbers possibly. What about January 19th for a possible date?

Again like I said, I am just looking to build some interest and hopefully get as many peoe together for a fun event as possible, I am really open to any input or suggestions; so pleas everyone chime in!

19th I would have to break some minor plans; but +/- a week would be fine. Maybe the week after there might even be some Q1 game night kit prize support?

We can always hope it will be ready in time…

Any decision? Sent you a PM, just need to know soon.

I'd vote for the week after too, as the weekend of the 19th would have some tight scheduling. Also, I think the Q1 kits would be a bigger draw.

If you can find a venue a little east of chicago and have q1 kits, a group from mi could make it.

Alright, I certainly agree that we should plan for a date where we can ensure that q1 kits will be available. Our issue is that the group (or at least some of us) are going to try to head down to Missouri for the Moonboy Classic on February 1st so what if we kicked the date out into February to give everyone more time to plan and to guarantee that we can get Q1 kits? Let me know what you all think?

-also any input/suggestions on format?

I think moving it to Feb is just fine.

As for format, I'm cool with whatever. Straight joust/melee sounds good to me.

I live in the Peoria area, but am in Chicago around once a month seeing family. If it times out right I would definitley like to be there.

We also have a group that meets weekly here in Bloomington, if you're ever up for it.

At the game store? Gryfalia's? I think I went once or twice, but school got in the way for a bit. I would like to start coming again. Was also thinking of getting something going here in Peoria.

Gryfalias isn't great because of the unwashed CCG masses*, so we meet at Dairy Queen on Veterans Parkway. Big tables, food, staff likes us.

*thing I like best about AGOT meta: better overall hygiene ;)

Yes, it seems that AGOT players are older, less "typical gamer". And DQ? Really? We aren't 16 man lol.

I would come down to Milwaukee for a good event. Monthly/Bi Monthly if it became a regular thing.

I'm a newer player but I'll also drive down from Milwaukee if it is a monthly/bi-monthly thing.

As is a side benefit to DQ, many tables are fixed to the floor.

We discussed meeting at a bar, but really do you want to play a 3 melee against a Martell icon removal deck after a couple beers?

Alcohol + martell NPE in melee = table flipping.

No, I really refuse to play melee any more. Too much time. If they fix it in the future, maybe.

A bar? Hmmm…a shot for every power you claim? :)
