Ritual of Mass Destruction, or the Ritual of Sundering

By Kbobsky, in Black Crusade

Hi,

In our BC campaign yesterday we ended up using the Ritual of Sundering to deal with some Arbites troops. Our campaign takes place on Malfi.

As a convoy of some thousands of Arbites troops and their rhino transports moved through a choke-point in the scav-zone, on their way to assault some of our allies, a daring group of insurgents detonated a strategic bridge, bringing their advance to a halt. At this moment The Trusted (our warband), positioned on a building overlooking the kill-zone unleashed the Ritual of Sundering, which weakened the boundary between reality and the warp for 25 hours in a kilometer wide area.

Apart from everyone in the area being subject to mutation, death and general nastiness, psychic phenomena runs rampant. Most of these phenomena are relatively "harmless", but some 25% are more serious. Explosions, rains of blood, general wailing and gnashing of teeth. Some 20% of the more nasty stuff is pretty nasty indeed. Demonic incursion nasty.

Spread over the 25 hour period, the following happens:

- 900 Khornate Bloodletters pop into existence, slaughter everyone in sight for a minute or so and disappear again

- 337 Cases of mass possession, where lesser demons of Tzeentch possess the unwashed masses, commit unspeakable acts of plotting and leave

- 33 Cases of total annihilation, where some luckless peasant is reduced to his constituent particles, being replaced by a lesser demon of Tzeentch, permanently

and last, but not least… my favorite

- 900 Greater Daemons of Tzeentch, Lords of Change, pretty much permanently possess anyone happening to wander by. The plotting and scheming will be over the charts.

These numbers might be off a bit, but they are based on the fact, that within the are of the ritual there is a psychic phenomena every round, so that's 30 per minute, 1800 per hour etc. 25% of these cause a roll on the Perils of the Warp -table.

Anyway, even without rolling for the phenomena, using this ritual in, let's say a modestly populated habstack of a hive will have a few million imperials mutating, dying and otherwise having a bad day.

I guess GMs should pretty much either house-rule to ritual to something a bit more tolerable, or decide that the ritual can only be found on page 5 of the Emperor's diary.

Also, as a happier note my character created a daemon weapon, inhabited by the Lord of Change Dalloeg´geotde - bound 16 times. Mastery of Forbidden Lore: Daemonology is so nice.

ps. What's up the with the editor?

I gotta agree. We've been tasked to take over a planet and after initially capturing one hundred Psykers and forcing them to all Push a power in the same round, summoning a fair few daemons, we left a few drop pods worth of Space Men (Astartes) to fight with them for a while. The next day, once the battle zone had opened up a bit, I performed a Rite of Sundering upon the battlefield (in the lower levels of a Hive planet). 7km radius for 60 hours. We play that a round is 6 seconds, I'm not sure where you get a round lasting 2 seconds from. In total that's 36,000 rolls on the table. That's where we finished last session pretty much.

Next session, the other Psyker in the group and I are returning to the Chaos Zone to both enact new Rites. The first will be at PR8, then mine will be at PR11. I will be rolling under 110 (Modified via the Rituals table) so with an average of 8DoS (with Tzeentch's Infamy Bonus), it will last for 74 hours, doing 44,400 rolls on the PP tables within a 28km diametre area.

That is on average 33,300 on the first table and 11,100 on the second. The first table has 24 entries which will all be applied 1387 times each on average. Each of the 18 entries on the Perils table will be applied 616 times! (616... Creepy!)

And that's only one of the three overlapping Rites of Sundering going on at the time.

Hopefully Exterminatus will follow.

I can see how it's a totally cool ritual, but you were tasked at taking over the planet. Maybe I'm missing something here, but wont Exterminatus cause you to lose all the resources of said planet once the virus bombs/nukes/planet-busting lazor beams make your mission a failure?

(Before reading, clarifacation may be needed. I have no background in 40k, only in DH/DW/RT/BC so this could refer to canon or not, either way, I couldn't care less.)

We're playing at the very end of the Badab War. Blackheart has gone off with his tail between his legs. He tasked us to take over a planet on the edge of the Calixis Sector, right next to the Maelstrom. Heis official orders were "Do what the **** you want with it, just claim the victory in my name."

We killed a load of Tau, enticed a load of Tyranids to visit, uncovered a large Inquisition base, framed the Imperial Guard for working with Chaos and summoning Daemons, summoned metric fuckton of Daemons and got a fair few Chapters of Space Men. There's a large four or five way war on the planet now and we have control of the Planetary Defence Weapon Platforms. It's all quite fun. We've only actually been involved in about three fights over the four or so months we've been playing.

We were thinking, if we could burn a big enough ritual circle into the planet...... Hmmm!

Oh my God, YESSSS I have to do this. 900 greater daemons.

I don't really get how one takes over a planet without it getting exterminatus'd. Probably better to just try to take over ships.

...

Imagine unleashing this ritual on a ship.

Teleportarium... wait for the shields to drop... STEALTH RITUAL! Muahahaha!
