Hi,

I'm new to AGoT, possessing only the Core Set at the minute (Defenders of the North Chapter packs are on their way)

So far I've only played Lannister v's Stark but I've read through all of the cards in the Core Set and plan to try the other houses tonight. The majority of the cards seem fairly straight forward, but I have a question about the Khal Drogo card. If I'm playing the Response action, do I have to pay the gold cost to play Khal Drog from my hand?

Response: After you win a challenge, put Khal Drogo into play from your hand. At the end of the phase, return Khal Drogo to his owner's hand.

There's two distinct templates: "to play" a card, and to "put [a card] into play." You only pay gold when you "play" a card from your hand during marshalling. "Put into play" effects bypass all costs.
