Lair of the Wyrm

By BatHead, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I understand it's only two days into December, but I seem to remember the last time I heard anything about a release date for this expansion it was tentatively coming out sometime in November. Has anyone heard anything new about this?

The newest preview "Hidden Treasures" states it will be hitting shelves later this month, so only a few weeks away!

I'm liking how this expansion is shaping up. The secret room option adds some new challenges and rewards that could really pay off during the larger quests. Though already I see a discrepency - the "secret room" card states you can enter for free, but in the preview itself, it states you must pay to enter. I'm guessing the card supercedes the preview, or perhaps I misread something. Also, the fact that the Overlord can remove a challenge token at the start of his turn kinds of spoils the secret room for the heroes doesn't it? Wouldn't it make it impossible for the heroes to recieve the reward if the challenge tokens disappear? Will this turn into another race aspect of the game?

Nonetheless, I'm excited.

Also, anyone in the Denver area want to start a campaign?

Hello BsnOne!

I just wanted to pop in and clarify a couple of things for you. First, you said:

"Though already I see a discrepency - the "secret room" card states you can enter for free, but in the preview itself, it states you must pay to enter."

But remember, the preview says:

"Once the secret room entrance token has been placed, the hero who placed it has the option of immediately entering. Thereafter, the cost of entering a secret room (referred to as “exploring”) is one movement point."

So, when the card is first flipped, the hero gets a freebie. After that, he must pay to enter or exit.

Next, you said:

"Also, the fact that the Overlord can remove a challenge token at the start of his turn kinds of spoils the secret room for the heroes doesn't it?"

On the contrary, it helps the heroes! All the heroes have to do is clear the secret room of challenge tokens. Even if the overlord does this for them (by removing challenge tokens), they still reap the rewards.

So why would the overlord do such a thing? Generally, he wouldn't. He'd want the heroes wasting as much time as possible in the secret room. But there are conceivable scenario-based situations in which the overlord may be willing to concede the secret room, if it means sending the heroes back to the main map that much quicker. After all, monsters can't enter the secret room…and we wouldn't want the heroes treating it as a sanctuary, would we?

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the clarification, ffgMark! I'm digging how this adds a new level of exploration and chance to the over arching campaign. Now it's more important than ever to pick up those search tokens. Also, I'll work on my reading comprehension before the next preview!

I'm hoping us in the uk get it around the same time as the USA and not have to wait about a mouth for it to be here. I'm really looking forward to this.

Anyone know if the 3 new lieutenant miniatures are also shipping now?

According to FFG status page they are still "in development" and expected sometime in Q1 of 2013.
