Falcon Squad idea

By Eruletho, in X-Wing

Everyone is talking about how awesome the Falcon is gonna be for the Rebellion, but the only Pilot I hear about is Chewie. While I love the walking carpet as much as the next guy, I wanted to see if any of the other pilots might be worth anything on the field. With that in mind, I build a squad around everyone's favorite administrator.

As a note, I did not build the squad to meet any specific flavor, but it certainly meets the space battle at the end of RotJ perfectly…

Death Star Assault (100 points)

Lando Calrissian (44 points)
-Nein Numb (1 point) or Milennium Falcon (1 point)

Wedge Antillies (29 points)
-R2-F2 (3)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18 points)
-Ion Cannon Turret (5 points)

Nein turns all of Lando's straights into greens, and Lando turns all those greens into +1 agility for Wedge with R2-F2. Wedge focus on burninating things, while the GSP gives him targets or disables threatening attackers. With the Falcon and a Y-wing, as well as a 3 agi Wedge, this squad is pretty darn defensive, with 2 ships that take forever to die and one that refuses to take a hit. Since Lando can just take his shortest straight once the fighting starts and still give Wedge his agility buff, Nein could be swapped out for something else, but I like it for the first round or two, which is when you really need the Agi bonus anyway. If not Nein, then the Falcon title card can give Lando a bit more survivability with the evade action.

Potential pitfalls: It's a 3-ship build, but I'm rather fond of those. It will probably have problems against TIE swarms, especially without the disaster-missiles. Speaking of missiles, this build has NONE. It relies entirely on Wedge and Lando's basic attacks and the GSP's ion turret to get the job done.

Thoughts?

It's good thinking, but if Lando doesn't execute a green maneuver, or end his maneuver within 1 of Wedge, it's not as potent. Defensively it's a beast, because who does your opponent fire at? Likely Wedge, who is going to take a longer time to die with R2F2.While your opponent is doing that, you've got the Falcon and Ywing causing havoc.

I've been toying around with some falcon builds, and here's one of them:

Outer Rim Smuggler with Millenium Falcon title card and Engine Upgrade, Biggs with R2F2 and Shield Upgrade, Wedge with R2D2 and Marksmanship

Since it's pilot level 1, essentially use the ORS to block your opponent (Boost Action is so much fun for that, because they never see it coming… :) ), while still keeping Biggs in their firing range so they don't all have range 1 shots on the ORS. Wedge can pick stuff off during the traffic jam. I dunno, not award-winning, but kinda messy in a fun way. :)

It won't work, unfortunately. Lando's text says "…one free action shown in its action bar", and R2-F2 is not in any pilot's action bar.

I'm thinking of leveraging a different synergy: Lando + Nien in the Falcon, with Dutch as their wingman. The idea is that Lando gives Dutch a free action, who uses it to pick up Target Lock, who then hands Target Lock to Lando. Two free actions is hard to beat, and even Dutch's Y-wing isn't such a bad shot with (potentially) Focus and Target Lock, every turn.

I think what he means is that Wedge would use his own action for R2F2, and his free action from lando for something else to help him out.

Yea, the idea was Wedge could take whatever action he needed during Lando's turn, and use R2 on his own turn if there was even a chance at him being shot at. If not, then just Focus/Target Lock combo for an easier time hitting.
