Hello, I was just wondering if there was any guidance from FFG regarding Kessel Run tournaments entry fees as I didn't see anything on the announcement page. I've already sent an email to my local store but they're not the greatest at responding. Is it completely up to the venue owner?
Kessel Run Tourny costs?
the (extremely-not local) game store I'll be playing the Kessel Run at is charging $10. Not sure if that's standardized, but it's definitely worth it for a chance at a Falcon/Slave 1
FFG has stated in the KRT guidelines that they are to be free to enter, although the stores were required to pay $60 for the application. I believe many stores are charging 5-10, although there are many that aren't charging anything. It all depends on where you want to play in the tourney.
Our store is not charging an entry fee per se. We are requiring our players to spend $10 in the store and then present a receipt. Most players do this anyway so it's not a big deal for most people.
Are there any consequences for a venue ignoring FFG's instructions?
That is the question.
No there will not be a consequence. My question to those complaining about entry fees puzzles me. I am the TO for The Game Shoppe in Bellevue NE. I am not an employee of he store, I vaolunteer my time for this game. I cannot even play in the tournament due to the FF tounament rules. That's col to me as long as the game is being played and people are having fun. Fantasy Flight set the no fee as a guideline not a rule. If Fantasy Flight would have said definately no then stores would not, but I would guarantee fewer stores would have signed up for it. The Kessel run information sheet also states that the TO should get the ships left over. Once again that is a guideline not a definitive rule. I will not be receiving any ships, which is fine with me. I would rather have them be for prizes to recruit more players. If you have a problem with the entry fee, then it is your choice to play or not to play. If you don't like the idea then talk to the store you will be playing at. Just have fun, and enjoy the day. Build your ship list, and practice. Good luck all.

Also here is the link to the Kessel Run flyer for the event. Nowhere in it does it state that there is a restriction on entry fees.
The no fee restriction is not in the announcement, it was in the application form, which could only be reached through a link which is now dead.
From what I recall, there was no distinction on the document between rules and guidelines. They were all just plainly stated.
Sean, you can play in the tournament, as long as you have a second TO. That is clearly stated, and even has its own section on the first page:"Tournament Organizer Participation." I'm not as good as others on here with snapshots, otherwise I would post it.
And, in my personal opinion, after re-reading this thread, I don't think anyone is complaining at all. People are just simply stating that some venues are charging, and others aren't.
If anything I think it should be with a suggested 5$ donation. Yes you can play without it, but the 5$ would help us pay for this awesome event
I realize I can, but there will not be a second TO availible that day. So no I will not be playing.
In other threads people are complaining. Since the application is no longer availible, I will defer to the store owner's word on wether he can or cannot charge for the event. If this was meant to be a free event, then why did FF charge the stores $60 for the product and event materials? The store as any business has every right to recoup expenses for hosting the event. Not everyone who plays will purchase from the store during the event. If we lose players due to the entry fee so be it. We have a core group of players that come on our scheduled Tuesday nights and it is now 11 + strong and growing each week. It will be a fun event for those who play, or at least I hope it is. Take care and enjoy the event.

Free RPG and Free Comic Book day are also not free for the stores as they buy the kits as well. Having the word "Free" in the title doesn't mean that every single link in the chain of custody for the items in question is without cost.. just that the final one is. Kits like this are considered to be in the same category as advertising in that they drive potential business to the store at the cost of the advertisement itself. Some percentage of people attending a "free" event will end up purchasing other things while there to make up theoretically for the cost of the kit and then some.
I was simply curious as to whether or not there was any word or guidance from FFG on the matter as I've seen the whole range of prices advertised for this same event across the internet. If we as players are expected to follow the rules during the tourney, so should the organizer. If the packet says do whatever you want regarding the price, I have no problem with stores charging whatever they feel is fair for their area. If the packet says it should be free, the stores shouldn't charge for it.
Then the best thing you can do is complain to Fantasy Flight and see if they will send out notices. Who knows.
In the UK, retailers are allowed to charge to cover costs if they so desire. Cant see a reason why other stores in other countries could not do the same.
If the kit was free, it might be a different matter but then you would still have staffing costs..

FFG took the no-charge restriction out within a day or two. Small retailers can't eat hits like that without a nominal fee to cover costs. My store is charging $10 and anything past our cost is going into prize support as store credit.

Ditto our FLGS. They are approaching it as a "donation" of $5 - $10. Like the above, any additional money collected will be issued right back as prizes. They don't want to make money, just break even, and if FFG wanted this to be an event which was FREE to participate in they should have offered the kits to the retailers for FREE. Let's be honest, they are making money hand over fist on this title. The list for the U.S. has about 240 venues on it. That's $14,400 in kit charges at $60 apiece. Honestly, I think that's chump change in relation to what they are raking in. A promotion like this designed to (1) cover an unforeseen and unfortunate delay in manufacturing and (2) build even greater anticipation for wave 2 when it eventually arrives, SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY FREE TO THE RETAILERS WHO COULD PROVIDE THE BRICK AND MORTAR LOCATIONS FOR THE EVENT. Period.
I do not begrudge my FLGS wanting to break even rather than losing money on this event. I hope fellow fans of this wonderful game will not let an entry fee to help cover expenses deter them from participating.
Good luck to all, and may the force be with you!
