Pretty much what the title says. I had some trouble playing it, but I'm still pretty green, so I wondered if anyone else has had success with it.
Tie Advanced lists, do they work?
Yes. Spend time practicing maneuvering with them. You can do it.
The problem is that you're outgunned, you need concussion missiles and to maneuver more like you're avoiding a fight than getting into one. If you go toe-to-toe, you'll lose.
My tourney list is 4 Tempest pilots with concussion missiles. I try to be more evasive and take down Rebel shield concentraing fire then using concussion missiles for the killing blow.
I use the missiles in like the third or fourth round. I try to get a target lock in the first round the. Fly through the rebel formation with a four turn around. Do a green manuver and take a focus. Now when those missiles go off you are changing a blank and ALL focus rolls to hits. That's just how I've used tie advanced fighters in games.
What have you found to work better? A squadron mostly comprised of TIE Advanced Fighters, a split between Advanced and Standard fighters or a squadron of TIE Fighters escorting an Advanced fighter?
I tried a list with three TIE advanced with cluster missiles. It didn't work very well. But I think that might be a problem with missiles not being worth their points rather than TIE advanced not being worth it.
TIE advaced should be pretty comparable to X-wings. No matter who is shooting at whom the number of attack dice and agility dice in range band 2 are the same. I do think Target Lock on a 3 attack dice is better than a Target Lock with 2 attack dice. But TIE advanced have a evade action and a barrel roll action, not to mention being faster than an X-wing.
If you can take advantage of barrel roll it can be the most poweful action.
TIE advanced, have more available actions and more manuverability. In other words more options. I haven't figured it out yet, but I think TIE advanced should reward more skilled play.
Not quite on topic, because it's not here yet, but I'm seriously excited about the idea of a 2 Advanced + 3 Interceptor list.
With the right maneuvering, your opponent will use up his opening salvo on a pair of shielded ships with 3 defense dice and the Evade action. Then the second salvo will be trying to draw a consistent bead on a bunch of Boosting, Barrel-Rolling squints with 3 attack dice, while the Advanced take K-turns and carve you up from your rear arc.
Heh, heh…
If we are talking about future lists, I see a lot of assault missiles in the future which means lots of A-wings and TIE Advanced.
Thanks everyone, I figured I was doing it wrong. Now I know I was doing it wrong.
I tried a TIE/Adv list tonight. 4 Tempest Sq. pilots, because it was nigh impossible for me to not be 10-ish points shy by including Stele or Vader and not corrupting the experiment with a TIE/LN. In retrospect, Maarek, Vader and a Storm pilot would have probably not led to me getting wiped from the board without scoring a single kill and maybe being short several points wouldn't have been that terrible. Anyways, yeah…based on tonight, TIE/Adv list do indeed entirely suck.
