Board Spaces without Draw 1 Card

By alboy, in Talisman

What is the exact order of play in the following situation if l land on say Tavern with cards on it for Enemy, Spirit, Stranger, Place, Objects & Event.

Is lt.

1) Fight or if possible Evade Enemy. Card no. 2

2) Fight Spirit Card no. 3

3) Do Tavern Space Board Space

4) Do any Event. Card no. 1

5) Deal with Stranger. Card no. 4

6) Take any Objects. Card no. 5

7) Deal with Place. Card no. 6

I know the above list is unlikely, but it is possible.

Any cards are dealt with as per normal ordering and rules. The space itself is encountered last unless it has notations that affect how cards are encountered.

l just noticed there is a Talisman Encounter Sequence on the back page of the Rulebook.

I see what you mean, but the Encounter Sequence states towards the end of sequence to Follow the instructions for the space, next it says to take any Objects,Magic Objects, Followers and/or gold on the space.

So do you take Objects & Followers before the Space Encounter or after it.

You can only take objects and followers if there are no other encounters on that space.

------

But i read that Hendee said that you must encounter the place the last? I know that place cards must be encounter at the end but i get the feeling that he means place locations too ...

I always encounter the space first, that means also for the village, tavern, forest etc ( after that i encounter the cards. I follow first the instructions and then the cards..

The Revised 4th Edition of talisman has a different Encounter Sequence on the back of the Rulebook from the one with the original 4th Edition.

The new one does say Objects, Followers & Gold should be taken after you Encounter the Space, ie Tavern.

When you first move to say the Tavern do you Encounter any Event first then any Creatures then Strangers then Places then the Tavern & last of all take any Objects , Follows & Gold.

The previous example seems correct to me by following the new Encounter Sequence on the back of the Rulebook.

Does this look to be the right sequence of play to other players, if not please list the sequence how you read the Rules.

l am not looking to argue with other players, just want to play it correctly.

Before you get to that stage in the flowchart you must have already dealt with any Events and Enemies in the space.

"Take any Objects, Magic Objects, Followers, and/or gold on the space." is AFTER the entry in all cases for a space encounter "Card Encounter Follow the rules (See “Encounters” on page 9)."

Actually I can see where the confusion lies...

Card Encounter on Page 9 states you deal with Strangers and Places then deal with Objects and Followers, but the flowchart interrupts this process with the ""Follow instructions on the Space" entry. I shall have to ponder... too much in my head at the moment!

Hmm.. after pondering briefly, it would seem that the last highlighted entry to take Objects etc. is actually extraneous. It makes much more sense to encounter all of the cards on the space before the space itself otherwise a space then becomes something like number "4.5" in the encounter sequence. Removing the step regarding Objects would seem the easiest option.

An interesting problem. Thoughts?

I think Jon's got the problem well outlined for us in looking to the rule book.... to be honest, our group threw out the flowchart rather quickly and never went back to it. We have our own ordering of encounter based on (1) space-based forced effects, (2) card order, and then (3) space-based choices for the player. (We also have our own rules for encountering both space & cards as well as other characters present.) That a flow chart was needed for a board game indicates some flaws going back through the varied editions... possibly compounded by changes in 4th.

I still suggest that where a space has instructions beyond player choice (City, Tavern, etc.) that these be followed first. One thing we all know is that when you land on a multi-draw space (like the Hidden Valley), you first always have to check if you need to draw another Adventure card. There's a very basic implication therein; the space must be checked first for any required effects. The same exists for the Runes and Cursed Glade, where effects are stated that must be considered BEFORE cards present or drawn.

The conflict arises when there are cards on a space involving player choice (usually when a Ghost has been placed there). Typically, other than having to draw Adventure cards, the order is then facing any Enemies before doing anything else by choice. Further ordering is clearly implied on the cards... along with the rule that cards of like order are faced alphabetically. Our group has found that regardless of flowcharts, these basic principles cover 99% of all combinations of space, card, and character(s).

Again, this is not by the rules; it's simply what is sensible... and the flowchart doesn't always do any better. Like others, I (and my fellow players) found dealing with the rulebook's incongruities (or subsequent patches and FAQs) didn't always make for sensible play... let alone easy play.

In relation to what Jon and myself are forwarding to Fantasy Flight Games in the way of the FAQ for this issue are as follows:

NON DRAW CARD SPACES - If there are any cards on a space when a character lands there, they must be encountered before a character follows the actual instructions for the space. So the sequence is as follows:

1) Any Events in the space must first of all be encountered (only an occasional occurrence).

2) Any Enemies in the space must be defeated or evaded. If successful, follow the next set of instructions. If not, turn ends immediately.

3) Any Enemy Spirits in the space must be defeated or evaded. If successful, follow the next set of instructions. If not, turn ends immediately.

4) Any Strangers may/must be visited.

5) Any Followers, gold or Objects may be taken.

6) Any Places may/must be visited. If moved to a different space, continue with encounter in the new space. If not, follow the last set of instructions.

7) Finally, a character may/must follow the instructions for the space.

Treat the space instructions as though they are Adventure Cards with a number 7 on them. You always encounter them last of all!

We hope this helps you all,

Ell & Jon.

PS. Please disregard the turn sequence on the back of the rule book, which is in direct contravention of what the rules say on page 10 of our beloved rule book!

I agree with Talismansilat.

You must follow the seguence on page 9 and encounter place locations the last if there are cards on the space.

Thanks talismanisland & talismanamsilat,

The list sequence for the FAQ is how l have always played Talisman, so l agree with the list sequence. lt was only after reading the sequence for the Rivised 4th Edition that l wondered if l had been playing the game wrong since the Second Edition.

Don't forget that if you draw a card that takes place somewhere else and not on the space where you are standing must be dealt first before any other adventure card is encountered. ( But that will happen only on draw card spaces..)

That's why I left it out of the list! gran_risa.gif
