Competitive 2v2

Thrones is perfectly designed to have a 2v2 competitive format. Afterall, tennis has Singles and Doubles. The winning team could then both collaborate on a card that would have both their names on it.

We tried this at KublaCon in 2011 and it was really fun. Teams could not show each other what cards they had in hand or go have a team huddle so plans had to be prepared in advanced. It removes any trouble with collusion . Its also a completely different deck building experience from Joust and opens up a number of different types of decks that could work well together in different ways. Teams could do a Control-Rush, Control-Control, Rush-Rush or both decks could have rush and control elements.

I'd love to try it.

Stahleck this year has a "blind doubles" format as it were, where you enter as an individual and get randomly paired up with someone new each round. No major prize at stake, but should nonetheless be fun.

I think 2v2 would be a fantastic format. There are still a few kinks that could be ironed out in the rules I think but if some time and effort is put into it, it could be excellent.

I ran a 2v2 tournament using the Clash of Kings rules last month, and it was interesting. Based on extremely preliminary results, I'd venture to say that deckbuilding philosophies would be as different from Joust and Melee as those two formats are to each other.

For example, as we saw in Worlds, more than one Control Deck working in tandem can be absolutely unstoppable. That was certainly my experience. Clash of Kings matches are played to 30 power (i.e. 15 for each partner) and due to some strength of schedule snafus, two Targaryen Dragon decks were matched against Lanni Kneel and Lanni Shadows for two rounds in a row, and the aggregate score was sixty to one for Lannister. YMMV since we don't have a lot of data on how good the players were, but I expect a lot of blowouts and a lot of unpleasant surprises if 2v2 becomes a thing.

I agree with Grimwalker. 2v2 is just removing the deckbuilding restrictions of "House X only" and the penalties of OOH, opening up a ton of abusive combos. It would be interesting but there would have to be some pretty savvy people working on a restricted list especially for it.

I think in Greece I've seen tourney reports where they have a 2v2 format that is 2 joust games side by side for a total of 30 power for one team. They've had great success with the format. This cuts down on ability to play abusive combos in contrast to a 2v2 with all players being able to interact with each other. Erick also recently mentioned a team format here on the boards that I believe was similar to this.
