Let me preface by saying that when we as a community reference FFG, lets keep in mind these are people, not a faceless corporation; respect is a must.
Ok, at this point I think most of us can agree that Melee as a tournament format is flawed to say the least. The biggest melee cheerleaders in the game can't decide what would constitute collusion, and the fact that 3 players who earned a final spot all got DQ'ed is sad. I would know; seeing other people play for a championship that you should have been in the mix for leaves a bitter taste.
So I pose the question: what is stopping us from doing a player of the year tally? Thanks to Nate's guidance, Damon's hard work, and Chris's vision and an excellent community AGOT has grown beyond what anyone would have expected from the dark times. Every year prestigious events are held outside of the regional season so I feel like we have a large enough pool of data combined to crown a Player of the Year. At the very least it would do away with the nonsense of an "overall" champion and fix the melee hijinks.

…and many more to come. Even if not officially sanctioned I've been killing time working on a scoring system to take into the first major events held after the world championship and culminating in the FFG weekend in November. I'd like to work together with the guys running these events as well as the regional championships to try to do something cool, and we haven't seen in this game yet.
Before I move on, I'd really like to say that XXX was the best in the game, if only for a year instead of having something tarnished by another overall champion.
PS. I know it takes skill to win overall. I'm just saying its silly to win something when you don't need to win either joust or melee to achieve the title.
Thoughts?
