Taking Control of Uniques

By Mooch68, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused by something in the FAQ:

"(3.27) Unique Cards and Changing Control You may not play, put into play, or take control of a unique card already in play that you own or control (except for putting a duplicate on a card that you own and control), or that is in your dead pile.
Thus you cannot take control of a unique character that you already have in play. You cannot play a unique card if your opponent has taken control of another copy of that unique card that you own.
Duplicates can only be played or put into play on cards you own and control."

Now my question is, what if it for the purpose of putting it as a duplicate of your card? First paragraph seems to say you can, then second paragraph seems to say you can't.

Second, since the second paragraph doesn't mention locations, can I take control of locations no problem and if I have one that is unique simply make that a duplicate?

Cheers,

Mooch.

(1) Were doez it contradict itself? Were doez the second paragraph say you can't play a duplicate on a character you own and control?

(2) The mentioned paragraph sayz "You may not […] take control of a unique card already in play that you […] control.". Me thinkz "card" includez "location".

Okay, time for ktom to write a wall of text. ;)

OK, just to be clear on 2 things since I am a little confused. (Mainly by the inclusion of the text: except for duplicates part)

1. In regards to taking control of a unique character, if you have that unique character already in play, you cannot take control of the opponents unique character (same name) for the purpose of adding it onto yours as a duplicate?

2. Second, the thus statement says nothing of locations, can I take control of their Braavos location (say with Mance Rayder) if I already have one? Adding it to the first as a duplicate. Came across this in a game and just wanted to clarify it.

Cheers,

Mooch

Correct. The rules say that in order to dupe a card, you must own and control both copies of the card. You cannot dupe a card you own with a card your opponent owns, and vice versa. Therefore, you cannot take control of your opponent's Robb Stark and dupe the Robb Stark you already have with it under the "except for duplicates" text.

Again, the "thus" statement is an example of applying the first statement. The fact that it talks about unique characters does not make the basic rule (see #1) invalid for non-character cards. This question effectively looks at a rule saying "Students are not allowed in the school library before the first bell rings. Thus, your daughter cannot do her assignments here before first period", and figuring that somehow, the rule doesn't apply to their sons.

The rules for unique locations are exactly the same for unique characters (because the FAQ talks about unique cards) . Thus, the answer to question #2 is exactly the same as for question #1.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up for me.
