expansion packs

By flipsnake, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

hi,

is it possible to use the 1st edition expansion packs on the 2nd edition Descent game?

or do I need to retune some rules, or do I have to buy the conversion pack?

thanks in advance:)

cant do. conversion kit will only convert heroes and monsters and no rules etc.

okay, but is there a big difference in the rules between 1st and 2nd?

Yes. They are quite different. Dice have changed, tiles are not compatible, etc.

You would need to retune a lot of rules.

Off the top of my head, you'd need to rewrite the quest objectives so that both Overlord and Heroes have objectives that make sense. Per 1E rules, the Overlord's objective is always to run the heroes out of Conquest tokens by killing them a lot. In 2E, there are no conquest tokens. There are no CT values associated with heroes to tell you how many CT they would lose, etc, etc.

The heroes' objective is usually to kill the named boss monster, so that part would still work, at least. Might get boring after a while, but it ought to work.

You'd also need to figure out what you're doing with all the chests, coin piles, and other pick-ups on the map. None of those things have rules in 2E.

The terrain tokens could be faked through, although you'd need to make up rules for a lot of the terrain that's been left out of 2E.

1E quests have monsters printed on the map, and the OL could spawn more with cards from his hand. 2E encounters have monster groups defined and loosely placed in specified areas, with the ability to reinforce as defined by the quest. So, at the very least, you would need to define reinforcement rules for each quest, otherwise the OL would have no way of adding new monsters to the fray.

If you just go with monsters on the map, you'll also end up with a lot of problems with the number of monster groups you have per quest, and also with having sufficient plastic to field everything on the board. A lot of 1E quests were designed with the assumption that earlier monsters would be killed off before later monsters were revealed, so the maps actually depict more monsters than the game gives you to use. 2E reveals the entire map up front, so in theory, all monsters should be on the board from the word go.

I'm sure there's more I'm not thinking of. In short, you would basically be making your own homebrew quests using whatever portions of the 1E expansion maps you decide to salvage. There would be a lot of house ruling involved. And yes, you would need the Conversion Kit to get 2E stats for all the monsters involved in any 1E expansion.
