Attaching Passive effect Link to a kneeling Maester

By thedaffodilfish, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Apologies in advance - I'm *sure* I read some posts on this and relevant rules discussion but I can't find it via search or by trawling through the board.

If I win a challenge with a Maester then attach Tin Link to him via The Maester's Path, can I then activate the Tin Link since the Maester is already kneeling.

Does the Link have to be attached when the Maester is knelt to check for passive effect to be activated?

good morning sir. There are a few things you got wrong above.

Tin link isn't a passive. It is a Response that you must optionally invoke directly after the character kneels. So understanding that, you can see that you would not be able to trigger it immediately upon moving it to an already kneeling maester. The Link must be already attached to the maester when it goes from standing to kneeling if you would like to trigger it.

good luck !

And a very good morning to you Sir! ;)

Many thanks for your response. I get your point about the Link response not being a passive.

I'll need to go and check on Cardgamedb, because I'm sure I've come across someone arguing that the "after attached character kneels" Links can be activated as soon as they're put into play attaching to a kneeling character.

But glad I've got that sorted.

They can and they can't. It depends on the situation.

Most of the time, and in the "I attack with the Maester and win; can I use the link I get during resolution," you can't.

The exception is if the link comes into play during the same action window in which the Maester knelt. So, for example, you win a MIL challenge against your opponent and they use Red Vengeance, making you kill something for claim instead of them. You kneel Maester Wendamyr to save the character killed for claim (creating an "after Wendamry kneels" response opportunity in the action window). Now, when you put a link on Wendamyr during the resolution of the same challenge, the response opportunity is still valid and you can respond with the new link.

So, responding as soon as you put the link into play on a kneeling Maester only works if the link comes into play during the SAME ACTION WINDOW that the Maester went from standing to kneeling.

As Dennis says, you can't just put Tin Link on a kneeling character and use its Response, because the kneeling of the Maester and the attaching of Tin Link happen in different action windows. In your scenario, the kneeling of the Maester happens in the "Declare Attackers" or "Declare Defenders" Action Window. The attaching of Tin Link happens in the "Resolve Challenge" Action Window, much later. In short, you can't respond to something that happened in an earlier Action Window.

You *can* do is this:
Kneel Maester character -> trigger "After attached character kneels…" Response on Pale Steel Link -> Put Tin Link on the knelt Maester via Pale Steel Link -> trigger "After attached character kneels…" on Tin Link.

This works because, in this very peculiar and specific situation, Tin Link comes into play during the Response opportunity opened by the kneeling of the Maester. Since this Response opportunity is still open when Tin Link is attached, you can trigger Tin Link's Response, although it wasn't attached to the Maester in question when the actual Kneeling was done.

But generally, you can't slap Links on kneeling Maesters and trigger the Response. In very un-technical terms, you need to trigger the Response *right after* the kneeling occurs, not some time later.

Thanks for the clarification and explanations.

Much appreciated.
