What is the point of having R2-F2 ?

By Ariano, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Maybe this was already discussed here, but I was not able to find it.

The Upgrade R2-F2 gives the Rebel starship 1 more agility, but it is an Action !

Currently no Imperial starship has more attack dices than Rebel ships have Agility. So, what is the point of having to spend one Action to have 1 extra dice which is any way no needed when you can use the Action in Evasion (which gives you a direct token to evade) or in Focus (which increases quite a lot the chances to nullify the attack).

I will really appreciate your input on this issue. Thanks.

Well currently no rebel ships have the evade action (and the coming A-Wing doesn't have an astromech slot), so that's not an option. Focus can only help you on one attack, while the extra agility dice helps on every attack that round (same with evade if a ship with both an astromech slot and evade action is ever made). Also, the Y-Wing might like the extra agility as it's agility is 1 which is less than any of the attack values. Or maybe in a rebel vs rebel match it would be nice.

That with the Evasion action is a good point, didn't see it.

Also, the fact that the Agility will increase for the whole round is a very nice thing in comparison with the focus token which has to be used and therefore only helps against one attack.

Now, this upgrade makes more sense to me, thanks :)

it is most commonly used with Biggs Darklighter at range 3 from the entire imperial fleet, so things like having 8 TIEs shoot at you with 2 attack dice, but you get to roll 3-4 evade dice against every single attack makes it very likely that you might not even get a single hit from any of the 8 TIEs

It's a good astromech to take for Y-wing squadrons since it allows them to avoid more shots (potentially), but yeah the rebels need the extra agility when they are outnumbered by TIE's.
