I just discovered the LCG. I've seen the two seasons on HBO and am about to finish the first book. If GoT is like other LCGs/CCGs I've played, I'm assuming there are probably major book spoilers that I might not want to come upon. Yeah?
Spoilers?
There are some cards that have text like 'if you control this card, you must discard character X from play'. If you read into that you can figure out that the two characters are actually the same person. But there is only two or three of those. Other than that i dont think anything would be spoiled for you. I played the LCG before reading any of the books or seeing any of the tv show and still thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
If you read the cards more closely there are a few other things that might get spoiled. Some "spoilers" are also very nonspecific. I'm thinking of one plot card in particular. It identifies an event by the name it was later referred to. All the plot suggests is further deaths of leaders beyond what has been covered in the HBO series. That shouldn't be a surprise given the reputation of the series. However, having seen the plot card may spoil what will happen as you get close to the event while reading the books.
… also some kinds of characters in Targaryen spoil things….. I obviously cant hint at them too much lol
FFG are doing a standalone card game based on the HBO series using the LCG mechanics, you could try this to see if you like the system.
once you've reached the 3rd book / series you can start picking up some chapter packs without worrying about spoilers.
I've noticed that most spoilerish cards are often named by different things to avoid giving away major plot points. The Targ cards previously mentioned are named by their aliases, as is a certain character from Brotherhood Without Banners. The various Bolton and Frey effects could be giveaways, but let's face it, the way those guys are characterized from the beginning, it's the most blatant telegraphing of trustworthiness since that one author named a character "Grima Wormtongue."
Some spoilers are in the form or traits… a particular character may have a trait that doesn't seem to reflect its current nature in the story at the moment in the HBO series. Other spoilers come in vague titles or card art that show a scene or something that doesn't seem right. I would say more, but I fear that saying potential spoilers and how the relate will lead you into looking more at it, thereby actually spoiling it unintentionally.
