Horton Salm question

I just got the Y-wing expansion and I use Horton Salm as my pilot. now my question is on his upgades he has to spot for proton torpedos, Why is that? have I missed an important rule to proton torpedos? Are the proton torpedos only a one time use weapon or can you use them for as long as the ship equiped with them is in the game? All in all I really like the Y- wings just want to make sure im using them right. Thanks in advance

Also, in the future they could print another upgrade card using the "torpedo" slot (similar to how there are two different kinds of missiles) and Y-Wings could carry one of each. But for now, the main advantage is due to proton torpedoes being a 1-use upgrade.
