What the future holds…?

By mouthymerc, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta

So the initial releases are focusing around the events of the original trilogy, much to the chagrin of some, but what do people want to see next? A generalized supplement, such as one focused on the Sith or Droids or Starships and/or Equipment? Is there value in such a supplement? Another era supplement? What era should be next if so? The prequel trilogy? The Clone Wars? Legacy? The Old Republic?

I would like to see one focused on the Legacy era myself as it combines elements of many of the previous eras. Jedi, Sith, Rebellion, Empire, it has lots to work with. Once I have access to more information I will probably adjust to that era.

The product description page, as well as the introduction to the book, both say that future books include a book on Rebel heroes in ~2014, and a book on Jedi heroes ~2015, matching both the roles of the three heroes of the Original Trilogy (Han > Leia > Luke) and the progression of plot of the Original Trilogy (Fringer > Rebel > Jedi). Each of these books is intended to be played independently, but will also play well with the others. I'd hope that they plan to release other supplements in between, or at least a good amount of web content. This is the first FFG game I have experience with, so I'm not sure how they handle things like that.

If I am not mistaken, you are referring to Star Wars: Age of Rebellion and Star Wars: Force and Destiny. I am aware of these books. The three books slated for release seem to follow the progression of the original trilogy. Now I am sure that they can be adapted to run campaigns in other eras, but I was wondering what kinds of books people would like to see beyond these. Supplements focusing on specific topics or campaign guides with a broader perspective but more fluff information?

Honestly, my money's on the space between the trilogies.

Honestly, I don't know that I'd buy another book on The Clone Wars or The Old Republic Era for more fluff. It would have to have something new, and currently that 20 or so years between Episodes III and IV are still very much ripe for exploration, and that's where I would want to place any Star Wars game that I was developing beyond getting the buy-in from the casual Star Wars fan that knows the original trilogy.

If they're just going to release a [insert era] Campaign Guide, what is it going to include to make it worth my money? I've already got copies sitting on my shelf if I'm looking for fluff and theme information. I don't need another release unless it's going to offer me something new beyond fluff. New species, careers and specializations? Yeah. I'll buy that, but not just a setting guide.

*shrug*

Just my thoughts on it.

True, unless they come up with some original stuff it can seem to be redundant. That being said, these eras are always being explored more and more. For instance, the Old Republic has been expanded on by way of the new MMORG. There is a great piece that can be used for fluff for it, Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia . But until we get more gaming stats and information, it may be some work to model. For some an actual Campaign guide may be useful. SAGA had their Rebellion Guide as did the OCR. For some, having those stats are important. Maybe a book on threats from different eras with minimal fluff may be the way to go, but I am sure their would be opponents to that because they want their fluff for whatever reason.

Do we really need a book on the Rise of the Empire though? This book seems to cover that pretty well, barring a little more stats for the Empire personnel. Stats for Emperor's Hands, Imperial inquisitors, etc.

I would like Adventures, in particular something like a 'plot point' campaign for Savage Worlds that details an entire campaign with a beginning, a middle and an end point in relatively broad strokes.

Or material detailing specific sectors and regions of space to adventure in, as seen in the old D6 books. So something like the Tapani sector stuff.

I like it, but the problem with exclusively Adventure books are that there is a limited buyer group for them. Adventures are notoriously low sellers. It is better when they are included in another resource. If you can get your hands on it, the OCR Rebellion book had what amounted to a campaign included with it. In broad strokes, but with some actual stats. The Dawn of Defiance campaign could be adapted. Not sure if FFG could do something similar or not what with the pdf limitations.

If FFG does plan on producing supplements beyond the three "core books" I would prefer broad resource books similar to Saga Edition's Threats of the Galaxy and Starships of the Galaxy. A book on starships, threats, and droids would be the most useful, as I'm sure all of them would be easily adapted across all the core books. Species and equipment on the other hand would be better kept in the core books in my opinion, like they were in Saga Edition.

Honestly, I'm hoping that once the rules issues are all worked out the designers will take more time to add a few more threats and starships, or at least some general, broad strokes guidelines for creating them. For example, the lack of stats or rules regarding Star Destroyers, one of the most iconic ships in the setting, is a major oversight. What smuggler wouldn't want to outrun an ISD at least once in his career?

Beeblebrox, the stats for the ISD will almost certainly appear in the second book that focuses on the conflict between the Empire and the Rebels.

For this book, I think the idea is that the big ships would be rare sights in the Outer Rim.

I agree that it is a little bit painful to wait up to a year for such an iconic Star Wars ship, but we will definitely see it.

Getting back to the thread topic, I love adventure outlines, but I recognize that the economics of publishing probably make these a bad bet for FFG. Luckily, I have a good stack of old WEG modules that I can mine for quick adventure hooks.

I have to echo previous comments about fluff. As much as I love Star Wars, I have books (shelves of books!) about almost any era I would want to use for a campaign. I think settings or Galaxy Guide style books are going to be a tough sell unless they somehow hit a corner of the galaxy that has not been covered in excruciating detail by previous products.

I don't know enough about the Warhammer line to have a good handle on the types of supplements FFG has published for other games. In principle, we do not really need anything other than the three big books to do whatever we want.

I personally prefer setting games in the time period between Episodes IV and V, so this first book appeals to me. I think the three years or so between these two films provides an excellent background for adventures. The Rebels had their first major victory, but Vader is still out there being awesome. Boba Fett could spring a trap on any wannabe Jedi at any moment. All of that is exciting!

I am pleased that Timothy Zahn has set some of his latest books in this time period, and I am looking forward to reading Scoundrels in a few months.

A product I would love to see would be a Shadows of the Empire style approach to the gap between Yavin and Hoth. I think FFG could find enough room in this exciting and dramatic time to bring something unique to the table in a setting or campaign guide.

I will be keeping a close eye on announcements about future products, but I have enough Star Wars stuff that I am willing to vote with my wallet and only buy books that cover something I haven't seen before.

As long as we're wishing here, it'd be great to have some meaty stuff on the Dawn era. Pre-Republic and all that.

Paizo seems to do pretty well selling adventures…

Apparently so too is Pinnacle with their Plot Point campaign books, particularly The Flood & Last Sons books, both of which have more than just an adventure, but also a fair piece of background material on their associated setting as well as some player material.

It's a business model that FFG might do well to keep in mind, a little "including something for everyone."

Personally I would like to see an Old Republic sourcebook as this is my prefered timeline, also the starships of the galaxy and perhaps a few sourcebooks which focus on specific sectors of space similar to the Eldrood Sector and the Minos Cluster of the West End Games line.

I'd really like to see FFG take a more aggressive stance on the books, much like WEG did back in the day. For example, I'd like to see the following:

2013

The three Rebellion Era Books
Guide to Rebellion Era Starships
Guide to Rebellion Era Gear & Weapons
Campaign Book (Detailing a specific sector with planets, NPCs, and info)
Three Part Module series in Campaign Sector
Guide to Rebellion Era Characters & Critters
Guide to Rebellion Era Locales
Rebellion Era Pawn sets
Clone Wars Era Preview Game

2014

Clone Wars Campaign Guide
Guide to Clone Wars Era Starships
Guide to Clone Wars Era Gear & Weapons
Campaign Book (Detailing a specific sector with planets, NPCs, and info)
Three Part Module series in Campaign Sector
Guide to Clone Wars Era Characters & Critters
Guide to Clone Wars Era Locales
Clone Wars Era Pawn sets
Old Republic Era Preview Game

2015

Old Republic Campaign Guide
Guide to Old Republic Era Starships
Guide to Old Republic Era Gear & Weapons
Campaign Book (Detailing a specific sector with planets, NPCs, and info)
Three Part Module series in Campaign Sector
Guide to Old Republic Era Characters & Critters
Guide to Old Republic Era Locales
Old Republic Era Pawn sets
Legacy Era Preview Game

And so on.

Not sure how viable it would be, but something along the lines of the WEG Star Wars Adventure Journal or WotC Star Wars Gamer? What with the miniatures line they could combine to release something that could apply to both lines. Only got my hands on four of the Adventure Journals before the line was cancelled. Was able to get all the Star Wars Gamers, though. Both have some interesting things that could be adapted.

And so on.

Don't think we'll see anything this aggressive. Plus a lot of what you are asking for is redundant. Much of it could be put into single books on such era books, much like we are going to get Age of Rebellion. By making the books stand alone they also increase their value to more players. A book centered on the Clone Wars with the rules to play would mean more people buying it for the table. A book centered on threats or ships would have less appeal and may mean only one buyer at the table.

The downside is you get people complaining that they have to buy a book where they already have some of the information. Or, as in the case of the Journal or Gamer, you get people complaining that there is info on other things like miniatures or card games or video games that is not applicable or helpful to some. The one thing I liked about SW Gamer was their penchant to stat things up from other mediums such as video games for the RPG. It was a nice touch.

If you want an example of how FFG supports an RPG line, just look at their 40K RPG products.

Which may or may not apply here. Remember that in this case each book has to be run past Lucas or at least his people. I like that they are trying to make things easier for those that want to choose how they play. By making each book stand alone someone can choose the era they want, once they are out obviously.

So we have Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, Star Wars: Age of Rebellion, and Star Wars: Force & Destiny eventually, all of which focus on the time period of the original trilogy and, to some extent, the Rise of the Empire era. Maybe even a little after the trilogy depending on the F&D book. After which many will be able to extrapolate into other eras.

We could see new books focusing on the Knights of the Old Republic, Clone Wars or the Legacy eras at some point. SAGA had a book dedicated to The Force Unleashed. Could we see a book Star Wars: The Old Republic (basically KotOR) using info from the MMORG? Companies love tie-ins, especially when they drum up more business.

How about a book dedicated to equipment and starships and droids? Could this be done in one book or do people think we need separate books for these? Personally I think it could be done in one book. One thing I think would be useful in such a book is an additional category added, specific to starships and vehicles, but could apply to other things like droids and equipment; specifying its era of use. This way the book could include stuff from many eras.

Or how about books expanding on careers? Or will this be addressed by us getting more books? Some of these careers will carry over into other books.

Just some thoughts.

I'm all for gear books.

I think they should NOT be produced for each era, but all encompassing. So much is used in across different eras anyway. The Y-wing for example. Which book would you put it in? It could be found during the Clone Wars (new), Rebellion Era, and still being used after the Battle of Endor.

I could go with either 2 or up to 4 books depending on how you divide them. It could be Equipment, Weapons/Armor, Vehicles, and Starships. I personally think that is way too many. Perhaps put the Equipment with the Weapons/Armor and merge Vehicles with Starships. Each entry could have Eras of availability assigned.

I don't know if an advanced career book would be needed until all of the 3 core (and possibly future core books) are released. We are going to have more careers added in the next two core books. If sales are great I could see more "core" books going into the Clone Wars or even other eras. Eventually it would be nice to have a compendium career book with all of the careers, talents, specializations in one place for players. This would of course be far down the road perhaps towards the end of FFG Star Wars's print life.

I'd like to see FFG do something similar to what they've done with the WHF RPG books. Its been my impression that most of the new books/kits typically have a new character creation, advancement, and gear options in addition to some small, themed adventures and a new mechanic or two.

Themes for these could include:

  • Traders and Merchants: adds Commerce mechanics, goods, new freighters, and how to legitimately make a cred on the Fringe.
  • Exploring the Outer Rim: Adds rules for star system/sepcies discovery, random planetary system generation, first contact, archaeology, etc.
  • Corporate Sector: Lots of good **** here like the CSA, Star's End, Trianii Rangers, and corporate espionage.
  • Pirates & Privateers: Details on shadow-ports and expands black market rules. More importantly, adds rules for eye-patches, and space parrots.
  • Galaxy's most wanted: Bounty hunter information, how to collect or post bounties, how to not become a bounty, etc
  • Criminal Underworld: expands reputation mechanics and how to use organized crime, the Hutts, and smuggling in the campaign. Details on Hutt Space
  • Denziens of the Rim: The cultures and species that call the Rim their home. Gand Findsmen, Dathomiri witches, Moisture farmers, Jawas, etc.
  • Sector Rangers: Local law enforcement type campaigns, outside of the Empire.

I think I stole all these ideas from other places on this forum, or old D6 books. I don't claim credit for coming up with ANY of them. But I think they all fit the intended focus of the game, and would have some market appeal.

-WJL

I think the big focus of this system is the timeframe, slightly after the Battle of Yavin, and I think this is what makes it unique. I'd like to see them stay out of other timeframes, but expand what's going on during that time. More playable aliens, gear, ships, adventure books, etc, but not "The Guide to the Clone Wars." That always seems to be the point where a pen and paper franchise gets muddled. If they want to do that, they should wait until after Force & Destiny and almost make it their next big RPG
