Damon is Penfold? Discuss

To me it just looks like a creepy witchhunt started because of the argument in the Agenda thread.

Actually, the theory was around well before the agenda thread. I'll admit that my returning to post had the single purpose of trying to get further forum posts by Penfold in an effort to find additional evidence regarding the perceived link.

Regarding the upcoming agenda, I did not know there was extensive discussion on agotcards.org spoiling the card. If the full details of the card were given on that site, then his reaction to it would not be any evidence of him having at least playtester level knowledge. The only public mentions I knew at the time were on the forum there was a vague, excited comment from mathlete that a good card was coming in a thread asking about when the latest champion cards were coming. Finitesquarewell made a very vague reference to it in the agenda thread that Penfold jumped on.

As to the original post, I'm looking to have this cleared that someone knows who Penfold is. It's true it could be some other poster using a second account resulting in no one ever meeting Penfold. I think Staton is correct that FFG can look up the IP addresses and find out a lot of information. Posts by Penfold are made during normal working hours. It should be easy to know if they come from FFG or not.

All I know is that if he/she doesn't gather exactly four more supporters and call themselves Penfold's Five, I will be sorely disappointed.

I ask again, what purpose does this serve? What good can possibly come out of it? Others have used the term witchhunt for what you're doing here, and I've got to say I'm inclined to agree with them. Why don't you just desist and drop the matter? What's your stake in this?

A few of us have been quietly questioning this for awhile.

And not just quietly! I actually asked him here on FFG's CoC boards if he is actually Damon which he denied.

I started wondering because of his uncanny insight into Damon's mind. IIRC, in all but one case in rule discussions Damon confirmed Pendragon's interpretations. And as you correctly mentioned, he also usually follows the party line. In other words: Lots of indications for a sock puppet.

Quietly in the agot world. I did not know the cthulu players had publicly asked if he was Damon. You are correct that he follows party line very strongly. When people were complaining abour lack of prize support generally at GenCon last year, and not receiving house cards in the mail after they ran out, Penfold pulls out the party line . These are the types of posts that first raised suspicion.

Oh, and as a side comment… here are the Terms of Use for the FFG Forums, that any player that has an account here has accepted. Interesting read. Especially two of them:

You will not solicit personal information from Player Account users.

You will be respectful of other account users - none of your CCs will be obscene, threatening, defamatory, invasive of privacy, or in any other way injurious to any other user.

Just saying.

What do you feel the need to get it cleared up though ? To try and get him the sack ? Really is that the reason, if it is that's proper harsh. Through the dealings weve had in the past I thought you was alright mate, didnt think you was like that.

@wwdrakey. I am not after his password, email, credit card number, ssn, etc. I do not believe my post is threatening in any way. If you want to find threats, in the posts finitesquarewell links to contain a pretty clear threat from Penfold that only his recent Buddhism is keeping him from doing he and Corey physical harm.

@mykel the purpose is not to have him sacked. If a FFG employee has publicly threatened players with whom he must work to design champion cards, do you not think it is worth bringing to light?

I've never met Damon. I've never met Penfold, either, but I've never met any of you (to my knowledge). Aside from the GenCon team covenant interview and the 2c1c deck-building episode, I know nothing of him at all. I've tried to follow this conversation and its history despite being a relative newcomer to the game, and I must admit I really don't understand what's going on here.

I'm vaguely, in a second-hand way, aware of a policy by FFG that prohibits their employees posting on the boards. It seems a shame, but it doesn't take much imagination to guess why. If that policy didn't exist, then the creation of an alternate account to post with anonymity would be a bit childish, but nothing that hasn't become common practice on the internet.

Since that policy does exist, I could see many reasons for Damon to create an account to interact with the community - which we keep lauding as the best part about this game. A way to test the waters, occasionally get some feedback on ideas he's toying with without being treated differently from the rest of us, and a chance to interact with other people who share a passion with the game despite not being allowed to by his employers.

It definitely looks like some of you have an axe to grind with him… and maybe there's a good reason for that. But is posting on the boards and interacting with the community really what you reproach him for? At worst, it's a little unprofessional and childish, and at best, it's a way to keep in touch with the community (to our benefit) despite the restrictions from on-high. If the only way Erick has of suspecting Damon hates him (and Corey) is from a vitriolic post from an alter-ego, then clearly he's been otherwise professional in interacting with them in person. If he hasn't been, then the gripe should be with the official and unprofessional interaction, and not this one.

~I've got a better question. Who is -Istaril? I don't recall ever having met him/her in person. Such a rational post could not have come from some random internet user. Now I'm confused. Is -Istaril my own alternate account?

Seriously though, great post -Istaril.

I hold no ill will towards anyone, nor do i want anyone hurt an any way from this thread. What i do want is the truth. If someone is going to preset an opinion, posing as an objective member of this community, and not disclose the massive conflict of interest vis-a-vis their employment by the parent company of the game to which they are presenting their opinion, then that is unprofessional at best and insulting at worst. If FFG wants to plant moles in the community to fact find and get a sense of the meta from within' I zero issue with that. However if they want to place corporate shills who anonymously cheerlead and defend every move they make, I have every issue with that. Think what you will of me, my behavior, my opinions and my persona, but at least i own it and don't hide behind a pseudonym.

Like Fox Mulder I want the truth, nothing less, nothing more.

edit: now that i've said my piece I will leave this issue alone. glad to get all the drama out of the way before worlds. hope to see everyone there.

I really hope this isn't the case, though if it is I think it would explain a good deal of the trouble Corey has had during the card design processes.

Cute. How about this explanation? I seem to recall a little bird telling me several people had issues with the design of that card, not just Damon, and a lot of work went in to balancing it.

Well, this well crafted thread started out fun and has taken a more serious turn.

Sorry, I can't join in on stalking Damon guys. 3 kids and all… 4th on the way, work, church, trying to remain relevant in Thrones, etc.

I'll keep focusing what little time I can spare on doing something positive for the game, instead of abusing it at every turn to feed my ego and prove my superiority.

You guys have fun, and play nice. Try not to throw and gold dragons at anyone.

I 100% agree with Deathjester. I laughed at the start of the thread but now cringe at this thread. When did this thread turn into an episode of CSI? As some of you know, I coached high school cheerleading for a few years and some of you are more dramatic than my high school cheer squad. And, some of you just like to stir up the pot. I love this game and want to see it grow and get better. Do I always agree with everything FFG does Nope. Have I complained about it in the past. Yup. But I don't attack and try to ruin the moral fiber of the game. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but personal attacks are just wrong. And when did the Thrones board turn into the grammar police? (Homophones? lol) This is why I seldom read the boards.

Why does it have to be Damon? Why not anyone else at FFG? Call the hounds!

I highly doubt there will be anything close to resolution here. If nothing else, Penfold (IF HE/SHE IS EVEN REAL?!?) may not go by a web handle at events. Hell, I've met a quite a few of you but I doubt many would know who I am in meat space.

Getting all worked up over nothing, IMO.

stop picking on my daddy!

Hello,

I am new to the game, but have started in the DC meta and hope to meet everyone in the thread at worlds this year.

My quick read of this thread has got me wondering: why are so many of you are attempting to "take the high road" by asking the OP something along the lines of, "what are you trying to accomplish with this post"? Your objectivity--your telling the community that "clearly someone has an axe to grind"--your maturity--is not wanted here.

A forum is a great place--and always has been a great place--to call people out. But aside from that, please do not try obfuscate the issue by calling into question the motive. The motives are irrelevant here. If you are having trouble separating the motives behind the question from the actual question, I'll rephrase it for you in a new post:

NEW POST: TOPIC: @Penfold

"Hey, Penfold, I have noticed many of your excellent posts on the boards. You seem highly knowledgeable with respect to CoC and Agot. I was wondering what meta you are from, and, or, if we have ever met in person at a tourney or a bar for 10 minutes or so? You sound like a guy I know by the name of Damon. Is Penfold perhaps your alias?"

Since when did this site become the DC Meta forum ?

Restrict maturity and decorum. They're OP and almost everyone is using them.

Wait, what? FFG isn't part of DC-meta? Now I'm really confused….

"IIRC, in all but one case in rule discussions Damon confirmed Pendragon's interpretations."

Well heck, if that's all it takes….

I'm loathe to post in this thread at all. While I agree that Penfold can be incredibly caustic in his posts, I don't feel any good can come of this thread even existing. I will say this. On other forums, this is the type of thread that would be removed by moderators or get you banned from the forum. I'm not suggesting that either of these actions should be taken. I would hope this simply doesn't get any more bumps. I don't believe I will have another reason to post in this thread ever again. I would ask that any of you who agree that no good can come of this thread stop posting in it.

This is the kind of haughtiness that we disdain.
