Newbie questions

By xenoss, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I can't believe I'm asking these newbie questions now (I've been playing this game since before CCG Valyrian edition, for god's sake! Although I only play at home privately, as I don't have a meta in my area). But I'm getting into the LCG just now and want to make sure I'm getting things right.

1. About standing/kneeling.

A. For cards that have Any Phase that kneels a character. Can I play this during Taxation phase? Characters stand during the Standing phase. Tax happens after that. So If I use a Any Phase kneel, I kneel that character, and it remains knelt for the rest of next turn unless something else stands it. Is that right?

B. For cards like Cersei (core) that says That Character does not stand during the standing phase this round. Does that also include other methods of standing? Say for example, if I have a Any Phase event that can Stand, can it be applied to a character during the standing phase that was knelt by Cersei? or does "Does not stand during the standing phase" imply that it doesnt stand no matter what?

I have more questions. Thanks for helping!

A) Yes, if you kneel a character after the standing phase they will stay knelt until either the next standing phase or another card effect stands them.

B) Not at all. It is simply a "cannot" limitation placed on the standing phase game mechanic. A card can still be stood through any other card effect.

General rule of thumb. The cards don't imply anything. Read them fairly literal. Also, check out the FAQ, especially the timing charts if you haven't already. I'm not sure what's changed between CCG and LCG but it is still a wealth of information and card errata that is pretty important.

Not that it matters much, but you are saying that Cersei's ability stops the character from standing during the standing phase - this includes the standing mechanic in the beginning of the phase and any card effects that might stand them?

Related Question:

For cards that says "At the Beginning of" a phase/each phase, does that happen before or after the phase normal effects? (Stand/tax 1st, then becomes "at the beginning of phase" effects? Or 1st resolve beginning of phase, then Stand/tax?)

In the case of Cersei (core) vs Jaime (LotR) for example. Jamie Stands at the beginning of each phase. If Cersei used its effects on Jaime (for some reason, may be an opponent controls Jaime). Jaime's effect can trigger at every phase EXCEPT the Standing phase, due to Cersei's ability wording (which seems absolute).

Question 2:

For cards like Corrupt Contender:

Challenges: Corrupt Contender gets +10 STR until the end of the challenge. After the challenge resolves, discard Corrupt Contender from play (cannot be saved). Limit once per challenge.

Do I have the option to NOT use this ability (so I can choose when to use it)? Or does this trigger automatically whenever I use Corrupt Contender in a challenge?

Also, does the effect discard all my Corrupt Contenders from play (if I control multiple) or does this only apply to the card itself?

Thanks for the help.

And great to see ktom is still around. :) You have been the pillar of the AGoT community for as long as I can remember.

Questions 1: Before. For detailed timing, check the charts in the FAQ (you'll find each phase has a "Phase begins" framework, which, as a passive response to that, is where Jaime would stand).

Question 2: "Challenges" or "Response" (or any bolded text) can be triggered at the controlling players choice, provided that the requirements are met. In this case, you can choose whether or not to trigger Corrupt Contender. These bolded texts contrast directly with a passive, like Jaime's standing - which happens automatically when the conditions are met.

Thanks. Got it.

Q3:

For a card Infamous!, what sort of power do I get to steal?

Am I right to assume that Power challenge doesn't count. It moves power from 1 house card to another, so it is not claimed power. It only works for unopposed challenges (claims 1 power), or dominance (claims 1 power).

Q4:

Can events that require gold be used during an opponent's marshaling phase?

In the FAQ it says "Only the Active Player can take action that costs gold." I was taking it to mean I can't use gold to play characters, lands, and attachments. But playing an event that has a gold cost I never thought about it before. It is a player action, AND it costs gold. Thus, it is a player action that costs gold. Therefore it follows that only the active player can play events that have a gold cost.

And on that same note, character abilities that have a gold cost, can also ONLY be used for the Active player.

Is that so?

Those are the most usual "sorts," but Infamous can take any power that an effect takes out of the power pool and puts onto the House card. So power grabbed with events like "Make an Example" is fair game, too.

Thanks again ktom!

Edited the post with a Question 4 while you responded. (just missed you!)

Can you please take a look?

btw ktom do you still run the ktom website from back in the day?

Marshal

"Only 1 player can marshal cards (i .e., play cards from his hand to the play area by paying the printed gold cost on the card ) at a time, but other players can still take 'Marshalling:' or 'Any Phase:' actions as usual."

So, if you want to play an "Marshaling" or "Any Phase" effect that requires you to pay a gold cost, you can do that. Triggering such effects is not "marshalling" a card.
